Big changes are happening at The Speech Lab! ✨🚧

Demo started this week on our full building renovation, and we are so excited to share the process with you. We’re adding two new treatment rooms, a sensory gym, and a completely new front waiting area — all designed to better serve our families and invest in our community.

Phase 1 is happening in the back portion of the building, which means no interruption to services — just some noise for now😄. Once that’s complete, we’ll transition to the back while the front half gets its makeover (hello, fresh new look!). We even uncovered 13-foot ceilings with original wood — such a fun surprise!

We can’t wait to take you along for the ride!

🌟 Meet Kelly 🌟
We are so excited to welcome Kelly as an SLP Assistant at our clinic! A proud Mexico native, Kelly has over 21 years of experience in education and a heart for helping children thrive.

She graduated from Mexico High School, went on to earn her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Curriculum & Instruction, and later completed her SLP-A Certificate. Kelly has worked extensively with school-aged children, providing speech and language support across a wide range of needs.

With her background in literacy and interventions, Kelly is passionate about helping students find their voice and reach their full potential. Being deeply rooted in the Mexico community, she understands the strengths and values of the families she serves.

Kelly will continue her full-time role with Mexico Public Schools while also seeing a few clients at our clinic after the school day.

Outside of work, Kelly loves enjoying country life with her two sons. You can often find her at their sporting events, hiking, reading, cheering on MU football, or spending summer days at the pool.

Help us give Kelly a warm welcome! 💚

✨ Meet Kim! ✨
We’re thrilled to welcome Kim to The Speech Lab team this year! She’ll be serving students at Mexico Public Schools — so if you see her at Hawthorne, Eugene Field, or the Middle School, make sure to say hello 👋

Kim brings years of experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist, working in both public and private school settings. She’s especially passionate about early language development, phonological speech disorders, and helping students build strong reading and writing skills. Recently, she’s also focused on Gestalt Language Processing and Natural Language Acquisition — tools that have made a real difference for many children.

Outside of work, Kim enjoys cooking, coffee with friends, and spending time outdoors with her husband and two kids in Columbia, MO.

We’re so happy to have her on our team!💚

Many believe that children will simply “outgrow” their speech delays. ⏳

The truth is, while some children may catch up, many don’t — and leaving delays untreated can impact communication, learning, and confidence in the long run.

That's why early intervention is so important. Skills build on top of preexisting skills, so getting started with proactive treatment is essential to set children up for success later on. 💬✨

Speech disorders aren’t a parent’s fault. 👨‍👩‍👧🧠

This week, we’re busting the myth that speech disorders are caused by parenting. The truth is, speech and language delays and disorders can be linked to a variety of factors such as genetics, developmental delays, hearing issues, neurological conditions, and more — and parents aren’t to blame.

What’s more important is the role early intervention plays. With the right support and therapy, children can thrive in their communication skills. 💬

There are so many myths out there about speech therapy, and we’re here to set the record straight. Each week, we’ll tackle a common misconception and share the truth behind it.

This week’s myth: “Speech therapy is only for children.”
We hear this one all the time, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Speech therapy can support people of all ages, including adults recovering from strokes or brain injuries, or managing conditions like Parkinson’s, stuttering, voice disorders, or even swallowing difficulties.

Communication matters at every stage of life, and we’re here to help every step of the way.💚
