In Loving Memory
Margarita A. Flood
July 1, 1937 – March 8, 2026

MEXICO, NY — Margarita A. Flood, 88, of Mexico, NY, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Born July 1, 1937, in New York, New York, Margarita lived a life defined by warmth, honesty, humor, and a heart that was always open to others—human or otherwise. She was married to the late Thomas Flood (1933–1992), a veteran who proudly served in the Korean War. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Alida DeMesa.

Margarita graduated from William Cullen Bryant High School and later attended Bryant & Stratton College. She spent more than 30 years driving a school bus for Mexico Academy and Central Schools, where generations of local children knew her not just as their driver, but as a familiar and steady presence in their day. She also waitressed for many years at Beck’s Hotel, where her quick wit and easy conversation made her well known to regulars.

A communicant of St. Anne Mother of Mary Catholic Church in Mexico, Margarita devoted much of her time to serving her community. She volunteered with RSVP, the Mexico Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, the Girl Scouts, 4-H, and the Mexico Senior Stars. She also taught osteoarthritis classes and was honored with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for her years of service.

But anyone who knew Margarita knew that titles and awards only told a small part of the story.

She had a deep love for animals and rarely turned away a hungry creature. Chickens, stray cats, raccoons, deer—if it wandered near her yard, there was a good chance it left with a full stomach. Her compassion for animals was just another reflection of the way she approached life: with generosity and care for anything that crossed her path.

Margarita was famously sassy in the way that made people laugh rather than blush. She had absolutely no filter and believed honesty was always the best policy—even when it caught people off guard. What you saw was exactly what you got, and that authenticity made people gravitate toward her.

She also had the rare ability to talk to anyone about anything. A five-minute conversation with Margarita could feel like catching up with an old friend you hadn’t seen in decades. Whether she was sharing stories, cracking jokes, or telling it exactly how she saw it, she had a way of making people feel welcome in her orbit.

Above all else, Margarita loved people—sometimes to a fault. Her door, her table, and her heart were always open.

She is survived by her children Catherine (Pat) Flood-Costabile, Peter (Kimberly) Flood, and Dorothy (Terence) Timlin; her beloved grandchildren Salvatore (Meghan) Mastropolo, Jessica Flood, Nicholas Flood, Ryan Timlin, Eric Timlin, and Shannon Timlin; and step-granddaughter Melissa (Mark) Schneider and step-great-grandchildren Juliana, Sofia, and Luca Schneider.

Margarita’s laughter, blunt honesty, and boundless compassion will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the many lives she touched over the years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from St. Anne Mother of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Mexico, NY. Burial will take place in Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton Long Island. Relatives and Friends are invited to Calling Hours on Monday, March 16, 2026 from 4 - 7 p.m. from Harter Funeral Home, Inc. Mexico, NY.

Donations In Margarita’s name may be made to the Oswego County Humane Society. As she loved and cared for and found comfort in many animals throughout her life. As well as donating to many animal organizations throughout her lifetime
