Today was special. I had the privilege of training law enforcement officers from all over Miami Dade County through on best practices when encountering an individual with a developmental and/or intellectual disability. I gave out laminated visuals they could use for non-speaking folks or those that just would benefit from a visual to process commands or directions better. I also supplied sensory fidget toy gift bags for them to keep in their car, as a way to help a person ground and keep their hands visible so both officer and citizen can feel safe. We spoke about the impacts of trauma and disability, fight or flight responses in Autistic people, and everyone’s right to feel safe and supported. I learned just as much from them as they did from me. My job is pretty cool sometimes. A big thank you to and for allowing me to represent them and their work with this opportunity!

Happy 1st Day of School to all of your precious little ones! A reminder from your friendly neighborhood child psychologist on what are the most important lessons this school year:

1. Empathy-Teach your children about perspective taking and kindness. Better yet, model it.

2. Inclusion-Model and teach your children that people are worthy no matter where they come from, what color their skin is, their neurology, what they look like, or who they love.

3. Body autonomy, body safety, online safety and consent-You can teach kids stranger danger all you want, but statistically, the biggest danger lies with the people they know.

4. Prioritize free play and being a kid over a rigorous and demanding after school schedule.

5. Integrity-Teach your children that doing the right thing without the expectation of external validation and reward is important.

6. Effort > Perfect grades and academic performance.

7. Kindness toward self-Teach positive or neutral self talk to your children. Better yet, model it.

8. If you’re going to put limits on screen time, you better be modeling it as a family. Put your phone down and set an example.

9. Move your body and go outdoors at some point. Nature and movement are natural regulators to our nervous systems.

10. Grace-Don’t forget you’re human and fallible as a parent. Be kind to yourself, even when you have to hold yourself accountable.

To my precious colleagues, families, and followers, I will be taking some time off beginning next Wednesday 11/27 through late Spring of 2025 to embark on the incredible journey of parenthood. This was our long awaited miracle baby boy and we couldn’t be happier. I know deep in my heart that motherhood will only make me stronger and wiser in my calling to provide the best care I can. I will miss working with my precious warriors and their resilient families, but will be back ready to continue the journey with you soon! Thank you for teaching me more than I could ever teach you. See you on the other side 🤍✨
