Speech and Language Tip of the Day: Give wait time!

After asking a question or giving directions, pause for 5 seconds.

That extra time helps your child process language and feel confident responding independently.

If you think you've waited long enough, wait 3-5 more seconds. you will be surprised at what this extra processing time does for your child!

Inclusion Tip #3: Multiple Ways to Participate

In an inclusive classroom, participation doesn't just look one way. Offering different choices for your students to participate can help them feel more confident and increase their chances of participating in class.

Common Ways to Participate:

Raise Hand
Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down
Hold Up Response Cards
Point to Visuals
Type on Device

When a classroom offers multiple ways to respond, more students feel comfortable joining in.

Middle school is where academics shift from learning the basics to managing the load.

Students are expected to:
• Track multiple assignments
• Transition between classes independently
• Take notes and study strategically
• Advocate for themselves

Success at this stage is less about intelligence — and more about executive functioning.

💡 At-Home Academic Supports That Make a Difference:

✔️ Do a 5-minute “assignment preview” together at the start of the week
✔️ Ask: “What’s your plan to finish this?” instead of “Did you finish this?”
✔️ Help them break big projects into 2–3 smaller deadlines
✔️ Encourage written planners over relying on memory

🧠 Middle schoolers don’t need parents to do the work — they need coaching on how to manage the work.

Skill-building now creates confident, independent high school learners later.

Speech and Language Tip of the Day: Model, don’t correct!

Instead of pointing out errors or mistakes that your child is making with their language, repeat back your child’s message modeling the correct grammar and syntax.

This builds confidence and reinforces correct speech and language naturally during everyday conversations.

For example, if your child says "I eated cereal this morning.”

Repeat back, "Oh yum, I ate cereal this morning too!”

You can place a positive emphasis on the word or words that you are modeling in correct form. Try it out!

Inclusion Tip #2: Visual Supports

Not all learners process information in the same way, and that's okay. Inclusion means meeting learners where they are. By implementing different visual supports in your classroom, it can help reduce anxiety and increase a learner's independence.

Common Visual Supports:
Visual Schedule
Labels
Step-by-Step Visuals
Timers
When instructions and expectations are clear, students can feel more confident and successful.

Valentine’s Day is a great reminder that friendships aren’t just about cards and candy—they’re built on thinking skills kids use every day at school.

Social interactions require:
• Perspective-taking
• Problem-solving
• Cause-and-effect reasoning

These same skills support reading comprehension, writing, and classroom learning.

💡 Valentine’s Writing Prompt:
“Write about a time you and a friend worked through a problem together. What happened first? What happened next? How did it turn out?”

This activity strengthens:
✔️ Sequencing
✔️ Narrative writing
✔️ Social comprehension

Because learning shows up in relationships, too.

Valentine's Day Expressive Language & Writing Idea!

Draw a picture and write about Valentine's Day.

Prompt: Imagine you are planning the perfect Valentine’s Day for someone special. Who is it for? Where will you go? What will you do together? How will you make them feel loved?

Include at least 3 describing words, one reference to emotion, and a clear beginning, middle, and end.

This is a great activity to address grammar, syntax, sequencing, emotions, and descriptive language.

Try it out!

Inclusion Tip #1: Flexible Seating

Inclusion starts with a choice. Flexible seating is a classroom design strategy that gives the student a choice in where and how they sit so they can find a position that helps them focus best. It allows students to learn in ways that support their bodies and brains.

Common Flexible Seating Options:
Wobble Stool
Floor Cushion
Standing Desk
Wobble Cushion
Bean Bags
Once students find their preferred seating choice, they can feel more comfortable, regulated, and ready to learn.

📚 Building Vocabulary Through Emotions

In early childhood, emotional language is academic language.

When adults name feelings (“frustrated,” “excited,” “disappointed”), children:
• Expand expressive and receptive vocabulary
• Improve comprehension
• Strengthen early communication skills

💡 At-Home Strategy:
Pause during play or reading and ask:
➡️ “How do you think the character feels?”
➡️ “What tells you that?”

These conversations directly support:
✔️ Oral language development
✔️ Pre-reading comprehension
✔️ Classroom readiness
