Sometimes we have to act like "decoders." Our kids and tweens don't always understand what's happening when feeling BIG emotions. The frustration and worry can cause them to lash out or withdraw. Our kids are trying to communicate what they are experiencing but don’t know how to articulate it.

So what do we do?

Active Listening: Give them a safe space to express their emotions and for you to listen without judgment.

Validation: It's important to validate their feelings by saying,
"I can see why that would make you anxious or angry."

Normalize: Reassure them that their emotions are normal
and that you are there to support them.

Problem-Solving: Encourage them to think of solutions
to their problems, empowering them to take control.

Make a Plan: Take a proactive approach and create a plan with tools and coping skills for your kid to utilize when feeling anxious.
