The Broward County Medical Association (BCMA) was represented by Dr. Vania Fernandez Vania Fernandez in Tallahassee for the annual Legislative Fly-In from December 8-10. She met with Florida lawmakers to advocate for policies that protect patients, support physicians, and uphold a physician-led healthcare system.

Throughout a series of meaningful discussions at the Capitol, Dr. Fernandez addressed some of the legislative priorities central to the practice of medicine.

A primary focus was the need for human oversight of health insurance denials. BCMA supports HB 527 and SB 202, legislation that would require medical necessity determinations to be made by qualified healthcare professionals rather than automated processes. Dr. Fernandez stressed that clinical decisions should be guided by medical expertise, not algorithms, to ensure patients receive timely and appropriate care.

She also advocated for payment certainty to support both patients and physicians, backing the issue expected to be filed in upcoming legislation by Representative Dean Black. Reliable and transparent reimbursement is critical to sustaining physician practices and preserving patient access to care across Florida.

On behalf of the BCMA, Dr. Fernandez further voiced strong opposition to HB 6003, legislation addressing medical liability lawsuits. She raised concerns that the proposal could significantly increase medical malpractice costs, drive defensive medicine, and ultimately limit patient access to care.

In addition, the BCMA reaffirmed its opposition to the expansion of scope of practice and emphasized the importance of physician-led, team-based care. Dr. Fernandez highlighted that patient safety and high-quality outcomes are best achieved when care teams are led by physicians with the training and experience to manage complex medical decisions.

Advocacy efforts such as the Tallahassee Fly-In are made possible through the support of the Broward Allied Medical Political Action Committee (BAMPAC). We encourage members to support the BAMPAC to strengthen our collective voice and ensure physicians remain actively engaged in shaping healthcare policy. Fraser Cobbe and Joe Daraskevich get in the holiday spirit ahead of a week where members of multiple medical societies will be meeting with legislators in Tallahassee.

This episode touches on some important issues that will be top of mind as the doctors sit down with state Senators and Representatives.

Fraser kicks things off with some thoughts on Artificial Intelligence and how AI will be a hot topic within all communities, including the medical profession. Fraser and Joe switch the focus to tort reform and close the episode by turning their attention to autonomous practice.

Medical care in rural communities has been an important concept for the last few years, so Fraser explains why organized medicine is in favor of a team healthcare concept where MDs and DOs are the leaders of the team.

The Broward County Medical Association is pleased to announce the release of the 2026 Physician Guide for Patients Selecting Medicare Advantage Plans.

With more than 613 licensed Medicare Advantage Plans in Florida, offered by 30 different companies, it can be challenging for seniors to determine which plan best meets their healthcare needs.

This guide is based on survey data collected from physicians across select Florida counties and aims to help seniors make informed decisions when comparing Traditional Medicare with commercial Medicare Advantage Plans regulated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The report highlights key factors affecting access to care, including:
- Network adequacy
- Prior authorization requirements
- Drug formularies
- Step therapy protocols
- Challenges rejoining Traditional Medicare after enrolling in an Advantage Plan
