Advocacy Network on Disabilities

Advocacy Network on Disabilities Since 1972, Miami-Dade County's lead agency to plan, provide, and coordinate services to individuals. Working for a world where we all belong

About the Advocacy Network with Disabilities

THE ADVOCACY NETWORK ON DISABILITIES champions the rights of individuals with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities by promoting inclusion, providing services, and advancing systems change. Long before “collaboration” and “partnering” were buzz words, these principles were the foundation upon which The Advocacy Network on Disabilities was founded. Since its beginnings as a subcommittee of South Florida's Health Planning Council in the early 1970s, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has been a coalition of individuals with disabilities; family members; advocates; community service providers; and other public, private and governmental organizations. With an original focus on individuals with developmental disabilities, today the organization also provides supports and services to individuals with physical, sensory and other disabilities. Our mission is simple: “In partnership with people with disabilities and their families, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities advocates, coordinates and provides supports and services.”

Through facilitating community collaboration, fostering self-advocacy, and promoting acceptance, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities goals include:

1) Helping individuals identify and access supports and services;

2) Bringing unmet needs to the attention of decision-makers and advocating for change;

3) Providing expertise about best practices and specialized resources; and

4) Conducting outreach, education, and professional development activities. The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has a proven track record of excellence. Since 1975, its funders have continuously found the organization in compliance with both programmatic and administrative contract requirements. Consumer Satisfaction Surveys indicate that 96% of respondents are satisfied with the help they receive from us.

Investing in children. Strengthening families. Building Broward. 💙

When Broward County voters created the Children’s Services Council, they made a lasting commitment to children and families. CSC invests a small portion of your property tax dollars directly into programs that help children grow up healthy, safe, and ready to succeed.

While it’s only a small part of your tax bill, it makes a big difference. Every dollar stays right here in Broward County — supporting early literacy, mental health services, afterschool programs, family strengthening services, and many other prevention initiatives that uplift neighborhoods and improve outcomes for kids.

Your tax dollars are working every day to create brighter futures for Broward’s children.

This Presidents Day, we recognize an often-overlooked truth:

Disability has always been part of American leadership.

Throughout history, U.S. Presidents have governed while managing paralysis, chronic illness, hearing loss, and other health conditions.

Disability does not disqualify leadership.
It never has.

Representation matters.
Inclusion strengthens democracy.

This Presidents Day, we reflect on a more complete history — one that acknowledges disability as part of leadership at every level of power.

🖤 Black History Month | Disability Justice Series: Brad Lomax
was a civil rights trailblazer who reshaped history at the intersection of race and disability.

A member of the Black Panther Party and a wheelchair user, Brad Lomax played a pivotal role in the 1977 Section 504 Sit-In, one of the longest non-violent federal building occupations in U.S. history. His advocacy helped force the government to enforce disability civil rights protections—laying critical groundwork for the ADA.

Brad Lomax showed us that disability justice is inseparable from racial justice—and that liberation movements are strongest when they stand together.

The City of Miami Art in Public Places (AIPP) program has opened an artist call for the new City of Miami Administration Building — a major civic facility currently under development and designed as a welcoming public destination for residents, visitors, and City staff. AIPP invites professional artists and artist teams to submit qualifications for multiple permanent public art commissions integrated throughout the building’s civic spaces, including entrances, perimeter areas, and a multi level atrium. Selected works will help shape the cultural identity and long term character of this important civic landmark.

🖤 Black History Month | Disability Justice Series

Haben Girma is a global leader in disability rights and accessibility.

As the first Deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School, Haben has transformed how institutions think about inclusion. Her advocacy challenges schools, corporations, and governments to design systems that work for everyone — not as an afterthought, but from the start.

Through her work in digital accessibility, education equity, and economic justice, Haben reminds us that accessibility is not charity — it is a civil right.

Black disabled leadership has always shaped progress.
This Black History Month, we honor the visionaries building a more inclusive future.

Today we visited Casa Familia — a community built for adults with disabilities to live independently with the right supports.

Highlights:
✅ accessible design (even the mailboxes!)
✅ resident-led activities + real adult programming
✅ calm sensory space (“Serenity Suite”)
✅ affordable meals + life-skills kitchen
✅ privacy-respecting smart safety tech (stove/water alerts)

Big thanks to Nicole Miller and Elvis for the tour and for showing what independence-by-design can look like.
