During her second pregnancy, Andrea Limas learned her baby had developed a complete heart block with a dangerously low heart rate. With her 27-week pregnancy now considered high-risk, she was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital for advanced care.
The pediatric cardiac team at UHealth Jackson Children’s Care acted quickly. Rebeca was delivered weighing just 2 pounds and immediately needed surgery to place an external pacemaker to keep her heart beating safely.
As she grew stronger in the Holtz Children’s Hospital NICU, Rebeca underwent a second procedure. The team implanted a Micra internal pacemaker, a device normally used for adults but carefully adapted for her tiny size. After 130 days in the NICU, she finally went home to meet her big brother. 💞
“The teams at Jackson, their passion for what they do in saving children’s lives, we’ll never forget it,” Limas said. “We’re so grateful for being one of those Jackson miracles.”
