GVRAP - Gun Violence Research and Advocacy Program

GVRAP - Gun Violence Research and Advocacy Program Gun Violence Research and Advocacy Program (GVRAP) aims to raise awareness and promote prevention related to gun violence.

Our mission is to continually improve Ryder Trauma Center’s response to gun violence. The efforts of GVRAP start with improving services for the individual gunshot victim and expand outwards into advocacy work within the medical community and Miami-Dade community to raise awareness of gun violence and promote its prevention. This stems from an understanding that comprehensive trauma systems are ideal public health models and include community prevention, pre-hospital triage, emergency medical care, and rehabilitation services. GVRAP is building capacity to address gun violence in each of these domains and contributing to the growing research body for the public health epidemic of gun violence.

Hey everyone! The team wanted to spread the word about an opportunity to engage with and help human trafficking survivors. The THRIVE clinic at UMMSM offers support services for this patient population, and you can volunteer there and learn how to a patient intake. There is a training session coming up on October 31 at 12 PM, on the 5th floor of RMSB. You'll get trained for this role, and you will also learn about human trafficking, intimate partner violence, and being able to assess and manage care of survivors.

If you have a few hours to spare this weekend, this would be another great way to fight gun violence by pushing for candidates that want reform for current gun laws. We hope that you consider volunteering if you have time to spare!

Hello everyone!

GVRAP is planning a ton of talks and events this year, and we're hoping to coordinate some research opportunities for everyone. Meanwhile, if you'd like to do something small and free to help the cause of gun safety, you can download an app by Johnson & Johnson called "Donate a photo" and give to the "Everytown" cause against gun violence.

On this app, you can donate 1 photo per day (it need not be anything personal, it could even be a meme, pictures of artwork, etc.) to a cause of your choice, and Johnson & Johnson matches that by giving $1 to the cause. Causes rotate every so often. This particular cause spreads awareness, funds research, and pushes for sensible policies.

The Everytown cause will stop receiving photo donations on September 30, 2018. Each person who downloads the app today and contributes daily can raise $12 for the cause; the more friends you can recruit, the merrier. And afterwards, there are plenty of other causes which you can donate to (for free also!).

Please stay tuned for more news and for upcoming events!
