Had a great time at the 33rd annual meeting for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. The AMSSM was created to advance the discipline of sports medicine through education, research, advocacy, and excellence in patient care.

A bunch of PM&R Sports Medicine physicians from universities across the country (University of Maryland, Albert Einstein, Columbia, University of Miami, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Icahn School of Medicine) served as faculty for the "Sideline Management Assessment Response Techniques - Emergency Sports Trauma Workshop".

Dr. Sandra de Mel and I presented a case: "Extending the Diagnosis Beyond De Quervain's Tenosynovitis: A Rare Cause of Wrist Pain".

Always fun to catch up with friends and colleagues, mentors and former trainees!

Exciting and exhausting day covering the 52nd annual NYC Marathon! Flew from Miami with one of our star residents Dr. Sandra de Mel. There were approximately 50,000 runners, and we took care of everything from exercise associated collapse, hypothermia, hyponatremia, and minor acute traumas!

PS I didn't run but my legs feel like I did

It was a pleasure to share 2 of my research projects with the sports medicine community at the annual meeting for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine in Phoenix.

1. Podium presentation on a study assessing the perceived preparedness of graduating sports medicine fellows nationally. They overall felt prepared across 7 domains, but there were some subdomains that had room for improvement - particularly, non-clinical aspects of medicine.

2. Oral poster presentation by one of my star residents Dr. Javier Santana on a study looking for differences between the primary specialties for sports medicine fellows. We compared Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. We found that overall, there are no differences in preparation for fellowship. The implications are many, including that all primary specialties are equipped to practice sports medicine in full capacity.

Trifecta complete! 3 marathons covered in 1 month. Did Chicago and Boston back to back, then finished strong with the Big Apple 🍎. Each one is truly unique for volunteers, spectators, and runners alike.

The rush of caring for literally hundreds of runners per hour was overshadowed only by witnessing the range of emotions each of them experienced when crossing the finish line.

Breathe heavily with me! Today, let's do some cardiovascular exercise to workout our hearts and lungs. No equipment is necessary, but if you have weights, you can certainly use them. As I am in isolation living that , I use a jar of pasta sauce and a can of corned beef.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends 300 minutes of aerobic activity for adults. However, any amount of exercise is better than none. Here are some examples of health benefits from exercise:

Exercise can immediately help with:

Anxiety
Blood pressure
Sleep quality
Insulin sensitivity

There are also a lot of long-term benefits!

In youth, it can help with:

Cognition
Bone health
Fitness
Heart health
Preventing depression

In adults, it can help with:

Preventing cancer
Preventing dementia (eg: Alzheimer's)
Heart disease
Stroke
Blood pressure
Diabetes
Depression
Bone health
Quality of life

In pregnancy, it can reduce the risk of postpartum depression.

4 Exercises in 4 Minutes! Exercise is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. It can be very difficult to stay healthy during these uncertain times. Even if you are in quarantine because of coronavirus, you can still get in a great workout for your cardiovascular system, core, and to improve your posture. No equipment is necessary, and you don't need a lot of space either.
