MDFT - Multidimensional Family Therapy

MDFT - Multidimensional Family Therapy A Proven Family-Centered Treatment that Transforms Young Lives and Sets the Course for a Better Future.

MDFT International, Inc is a 501(c)3 non-profit public charity dedicated to improving the lives of youth and their families by providing training and consultation services to help clinical providers implement Multidimensional Family therapy (MDFT). MDFT is a comprehensive, flexible family-based intervention for adolescent substance abuse, delinquency, and related behavioral and emotional problems. MDFT directly addresses problems in adolescent, parent and family functioning while enhancing the factors that change behaviors, heal relationships, and support positive development. MDFT is a scientifically proven evidence-based practice (EBP) that works actively with families, educators, the juvenile justice system, and other community collaborators to deliver effective treatment. Our overall mission is to improve the quality of prevention and treatment services for youth and their families by training providers in this highly effective intervention. There are currently over 100 MDFT programs in the United States, Canada and Western Europe, and we provide services to therapists, public and private organizations, communities, states/provinces, and nations. The intervention has been implemented successfully in a wide range of clinical settings, within different types of programs, and with diverse youth and families. You may find a listing of our locations and other information on our website.

Big news! MDFT has been rated WELL-SUPPORTED by the Title IV-E Prevention Services Clearinghouse and this matters more than you might think.

As part of the Family First Act, Title IV-E ratings determine federal funding eligibility for foster care, adoption, and prevention services. We are very excited about this review as we know how MDFT can help youth and families in dire needs of services. The re-review was completed in March 2026 under the updated Handbook of Standards and Procedures, Version 2.0.

Our team had an amazing time at the 2026 Joint Meeting on Youth Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery (JMYPTR) last week in Baltimore, MD. We are proud to be among the leading voices on youth substance misuse treatment sharing our vision for family-centered integrated treatment.

Many thanks to John Kelly and the entire team at the National Center on Youth Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for convening an amazing group of public and private sector professionals, community providers and advocates, and young people from across the country who are committed to transforming youth substance misuse care. We are grateful to every individual who visited our booth, posed thoughtful questions, and participated in our sessions. See you next year!

A special thank you to Child Health and Development Institute - CHDI, SAMHSA, Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, Partnership to End Addiction, Stephanie Marquesano / the harris project, CT Department of Children and Families

Building stronger systems of care starts with strengthening families.

The SAMHSA Children’s Mental Health Initiative (CMHI) offers $1M–$3M in funding to expand community-based mental health services for children, youth, and families. MDFT is positioned to support this work. As an evidence-based, family-centered treatment model, MDFT helps communities address youth mental health challenges while strengthening the systems that support them.
