His journey includes residency at Weill Cornell Medicine, an M.D. from University of Miami, and a master’s from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

I’m honored to share that I have been appointed Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at FIU.

This new academic leadership role is a privilege and an opportunity to help shape the next generation of women’s health providers, while continuing to advance research, education, and clinical excellence.

I remain fully committed to my ongoing role at Baptist Health Cancer Care, where I will continue to care for patients and lead in the field of gynecologic oncology.

This important clinical trial is helping to advance care for patients with stage III & IV ovarian, primary peritoneal, and fallopian tube cancers by evaluating the role of HIPEC (heated chemotherapy) at the time of interval cytoreduction, followed by niraparib maintenance.

Dr. Hernandez and I proudly performed the first dual-console da Vinci 5 (dV5) robotic surgery—a collaborative case between Gynecologic Oncology and Colorectal Surgery.

This milestone showcases the power of multidisciplinary teamwork and the cutting-edge technology now available to our patients. The dV5 platform allows two surgeons to operate simultaneously, enhancing precision, safety, and training in complex pelvic procedures.

Three battles. One incredible survivor.

Meet Martha Garrido — a two-time breast cancer survivor who recently overcame cervical cancer as well. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of early detection, expert care, and unwavering faith.

In 2009 and again in 2021, Martha faced breast cancer head-on. Then in March 2024, a routine Pap smear revealed cervical cancer. Thanks to the skilled team at Baptist Health’s Miami Cancer Institute and her own resilience, she is once again cancer-free.

Martha’s story is not just one of survival — it’s one of hope.
