Relevant 🏈 SportsBall 🏈 Injury Breakdown: Aaron Rodgers Fractured Collarbone (2017)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FOOSH
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cool word, right? FOOSH Is an acronym for: Falling on outstretched hand and it is one of the leading causes of all sportsball injuries there are!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here we have Aaron Rodgers (very relevant due to his NFC championship status) FOOSHing about in this 2017 regular season game in which the defensive lineman fell onto him as he reached to break his fall.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The problem with this bracing is that it puts the shoulder in a very unstable position. Many injuries occur here from this one to rotator cuff and larval tears. Funny how our natural inclinations sometimes lead to more harm than good 🤔
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anyway, his fall wasn’t the only thing he broke there. X-Rays revealed a fracture collarbone (or as intellectuals say: clavicle) on his throwing shoulder, forcing him to miss the rest of the regular season.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You see, the clavicle is an important bone in creating torque and rotation about the shoulder joint when hurling a football 50 yards down field. You can’t have that sh*% in two pieces or else you’ll be throwing ducks 🦆
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rodgers eventually had surgery and missed the rest of the season 😢. A worse outcome then when he has fractured his non-throwing shoulder the same way a few seasons earlier.

Repost from Dr. Rob Poliszuk PT, DPT, CSCS using - Motor Control of the Torso in Landing ✈️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Controlling your landing or eccentric phase of any dynamic movement is vital in all sports. This goes doubly for sports that require multiple jumps, consecutively. 🏀 🏐
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Take this volleyball player. We see a difficulty to control the torso when doing this reciprocal switch jump. The motor control faults we see in the upper body is something that should be addressed as volleyball is a sport where the athlete is not only jumping very high, but also landing in awkward positions in a reactive or non-prescribed manner. She also needs to jump AGAIN moments later. With these factors at play, we would really would prefer a mechanically efficient and controlled eccentric movement to optimize loading patterns and facilitate increased performance and reduce injury risk at the knee and ankle.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With this being known, it is best for her rehab and prehab to incorporate dynamic control and stability based exercises that challenge and prepare her for the unpredictable motions associated with her sport. 🏐
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So now that we know the problem, how do we counteract this, you ask?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Exercises focusing on compliant surfaces, perturbations and reaction while exhibiting a neutral and efficient torso would be the best route of action to address this single fault.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stay tuned throughout the coming days to see some potential solutions to this problem!

Repost from Dr. Rob Poliszuk PT, DPT, CSCS using - GLUTE SERIES 1: The Barbell Hip Thrust
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sure, squats and deadlifts activate the glutes in different positions, but the hip thrust is an excellent exercise to get a maximal glute contraction in the hips extended position, something that is overlooked in most programming.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a study by Worrel et al. 2015, it was shown that this was a significant advantage for the hip thrust exercise via EMG testing. This could be possibly due to the hips extended position + being perpendicular with the pull of gravity during the hardest part of the lift making it a novel and targeted 🎯 glute max activator.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Consider adding a closed chain exercises that as the barbell hip thrust to your regimen if you would like to add a different type of glute stimulus to your lower body days!
