What was the moment when you felt that sense of freedom?

*These things often don’t happen instantly or over night. This is a process. Consider how long you’ve been in diet mentality.. times that by how long you’ve lived in diet culture… divide it by.. just kidding.

It’s going to take much longer than you expect to heal from this - and a lot of these diet culture and fatphobic thoughts might not completely disappear. It doesn’t mean you’re doing them wrong, it won’t work for you, or that you aren’t trying. We learn how to navigate them and take them less seriously.

I see too many people disappointed that they *still* don’t like how their body looks or that they aren’t ā€œbody positiveā€ (which is not actually the point of the body positive movement but I understand the gist).

You’re not doing it wrong, we’ve been conditioned to believe our bodies are too much or aren’t good enough our entire lives, this isn’t going to change over night - and it isn’t the prerequisite to living a bigger, more meaningful life.

There are other ways to cultivate a better relationship with your body. See which route feels like you can take first: is it body… neutrality, respect, acceptance, kindness, facts, appreciation, functionality, or liberation?

Can we work on loving the person you are? Caring a little less what others think and valuing your opinion a little more? Believing you are more than a body and your purpose is not to constantly try to change it?

As you free up some brain space and energy, let’s dismantle diet culture, white supremacy, and systems of oppression that created this made up body hierarchy to begin with. Thank you šŸ™

And yeah this is hard, it’s often the people who matter the most! Family, friends, doctors, coworkers 😫🤬

Their opinions are just that. They aren’t facts. They aren’t helpful. And yes it hurts, you’re human and no one deserves this. No one deserves to spend their entire lives dieting, body shaming, and weight cycling either.

It’s crucial to do body image and inner work as we work on intuitive eating because it’s not all rainbows and sunshine like it’s easy to portray on Instagram.

There’s a lot happening right now and for some people that will suppress their appetite, for others it increases it.

For both, it’s worth going inside and seeing what’s going on. Name it, acknowledge it, and validate it. It’s ok to feel this way and it makes sense. Reach out to others you can connect with, you’re not alone.

There will be times when you have to override these (lack of) cues and eat anyways. I’m not always hungry in the morning but I eat because I know my next big break is 4 hours away and that’s too long to wait. I can’t do my job effectively if I’m thinking about food.

I know this can be hard and is part of the nuance of intuitive eating but often times the best thing we can do is fuel up and flip diet culture the bird.

All this stuff we’ve been conditioned to do…

Led to believe this was HeALtHy…

Made many of us very unhealthy and our body image pure trash.

Let’s start backing away from these things (and the scale, app, etc.) and try to first meet somewhere in the middle.

Think of how you build healthy relationships with others. How do you show respect, compassion, and build trust in them? Start applying this to yourself, we are rebuilding this relationship with yourself and your body and that will take tiiiime and patience.

One approach to this is to accept that as humans, we have all kinds of thoughts because that’s what our brains are designed to do.

We can pay attention to and act on the ones we decide are most helpful.

Please don’t beat yourself up for having thoughts… especially ones that we’ve been brainwashed to believe our entire lives. Let’s come up with some more helpful thoughts and actions we can take that align with food peace and body acceptance.

Let’s also help our entire culture deprogram from body shame and good body/bad body beliefs. All bodies are worthy of love, respect, and kindness.

✨Feel your feelings✨

Of course we can’t always feel and tend to every feeling we have at all hours every day.

Say it with me: It’s ok to feel this way.

We might underestimate how much these (and many more behaviors and factors) keep us stuck in our heads and cut off from our bodies. It actually makes perfect sense why it’s so difficult to tune into our bodies. Not to mention the constant message that we can’t trust ourselves, that we need to micromanage and listen to what an app tells us to eat/do.⁣
⁣
Think of how long we’ve been disconnected from, hating on, and trying to change our bodies. It’s going to take time to reconnect, build trust, respect, acceptance, and kindness towards our bodies. It can happen! It’ll just take longer than you want it to. ⁣
⁣
*I am not here to say any one of these things are ā€œwrongā€ or to shame anyone who does this. I did them, I get it! They are serving a purpose and someone will let them go when they are ready, willing, and want to. I know there could be helpful reasons with various intentions to do any number of these behaviors.

Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility, a day to celebrate and empower transgender and non-binary people around the world. It is also a day to remind ourselves how to best be accomplices in trans folks’ fight for empowerment, especially given the unprecedented legislative and societal discrimination trans folks are experiencing. Swipe for a few things to do today, especially if you’re not transgender and would like to learn more about allyship.
