Scalpel At The Cross

Scalpel At The Cross Scalpel At The Cross is a ministry of medical and surgical care to the Peruvian people and to the missionaries who serve them. www.scalpelatthecross.org

The goal of Scalpel At The Cross is to support and amplify on-going Christian ministries within the country of Peru. The addition of this orthopaedic medical ministry offers much needed aid to an area with a long history of poverty and injustice. The specific location of the Scalpel At The Cross medical ministry is the city of Pucallpa, which lies in the Department of Ucayali near the western bord

er of Brazil. This burgeoning town is now home to nearly 300,000 Peruvians. In contrast to Lima, which does have modern, colonial areas, this jungle town is a continuous maze of cramped, subsistence housing and dusty, open-air markets. Very little substantial industry exists in Pucallpa today. Most people are laboring to earn a living by subsistence farming, artisan craftwork or as small shop owners or mototaxi drivers. For these reasons, many medical needs are currently not being met. By offering much needed orthopaedic consultation and surgical care, Scalpel At The Cross hopes to improve the lives of these individuals and touch their hearts for Christ.

The Miracle Campus is no longer just a concept. It is becoming a physical reality, one where healing continues long after surgery ends. Lives that once relied on short-term relief are soon stepping into long-term restoration.

For years, access to orthotics, prosthetics, and rehabilitation simply did not exist in the Amazon region of Peru. Now, that gap is on the verge of being filled once the campus is fully up and running.

This represents a true shift: from mission trips to sustained impact, from one-time care to a continuum of healing.

PATIENT STORY: Diego VillaCorta Tenazoa

Diego, a 37-year-old husband and father, came to us for a left small finger ray resection following a violent machete attack by a neighbor struggling with schizophrenia. Despite the trauma, he carried a quiet yet powerful peace that filled the room.

When asked if he knew Jesus Christ, Diego shared that he is a believer and a teacher of the Word. Though he had plans to return to college and complete his degree, he spoke without anger or resentment. Instead, he said, “The Lord knows what He’s doing. I’m just grateful I’m alive, my children are safe, and God will take care of the rest.”

His unwavering trust in God, even in the midst of unexpected hardship, was deeply moving. Diego smiled throughout his time with us and with fellow patients, reflecting a joy that comes from Christ’s presence.

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

Many who are served through Scalpel feel stirred to return and serve the mission themselves. That was the case for Pastor Jimmy.
He came back to serve, carrying forward the same hope he once received through his own patient journey. We are deeply grateful for our team in Peru, and for leaders like Pastor Jimmy, whose life and testimony reflect the true heart of this foundation.

During the January surgical campaign, he spent time with each patient, listening to their stories, sharing the Gospel, and pointing them to the love he has personally experienced through Jesus Christ. Through his faith, many encountered Jesus in a deeply personal way, even beginning to encourage one another with the Good News throughout their recovery journeys.

Over the years, this mission has grown not only in the quality of care provided, but in the people brought together to serve with purpose and compassion. Each patient is seen, known, and valued, not as a case, but as a person created in the image of God.

Every patient receives skilled, dedicated medical care. Each patient also hears the message of the Gospel and is met with spiritual hope. True healing doesn't stop at the body. It reaches the soul.

In many majority-world settings, patient care is tracked on paper, scattered across disconnected systems, and frequently lost between clinic visits, surgical procedures, and follow-up appointments. Research shows that this fragmentation contributes to delayed care, missed outcomes, and limited long-term health impact, particularly surgical environments where resources are lacking.

Developed by Scalpel At The Cross, CrossCare is an electronic medical record (EMR) system designed to address the unique documentation challenges of surgical missions and low-resource healthcare settings.

Key Features:

•Offline functionality — operates without a reliable internet connection

•Automatic syncing — data uploads when connectivity is restored
Longitudinal patient tracking — follows each patient from initial consultation through surgery, recovery, and follow-up

•Intuitive design — built for clinical teams of varying technical backgrounds, minimizing training time and reducing documentation burden in fast-paced field environments

Continuity of care is a foundational principle in global health. When patient records are incomplete or inaccessible, providers cannot make fully informed clinical decisions, outcomes are harder to measure, and systemic improvement stalls. CrossCare addresses this by creating a complete, portable patient record that travels with the care journey.

Missions are most effective when they contribute to lasting health system strengthening. Tools like CrossCare support this by enabling data collection, outcome tracking, and stronger partnerships between visiting and local care teams.

Sustainable impact in global surgical care begins with knowing your patient and following through!

The Miracle Campus will house the first Orthotics & Prosthetics and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation facility in the region. Orthotics, prosthetics, and PT are essential to the healing journey, and because of your generous support, our patients receive the ongoing care they need to continue moving toward restoration.

This complex was built in response to the voices of the community and developed in partnership with local and global leaders. Healing is a continuum, and we are here for every step of it. The campus is designed to sustain long-term, compassionate care in a region that has long needed it.

He is Risen Indeed! 🙏

This Easter, we are reminded of something we never want to forget: we are each in need of a Savior. That is precisely why the empty tomb changes everything.

Christ came for the broken, the desperate, the ones who had run out of hope. Living a sinless life, He walked into the deepest darkness humanity had to offer: betrayal, suffering, and death itself. Yet He was victorious.

He is the Healer. He is the Hope. He is the reason despair does not get the final word.

Because He lives, there is hope that outlasts every trial. Because He lives, love reaches the places the world has forgotten. Because He lives, the grave is not the end.

Grateful for a love so relentless that not even death could contain it.

He is Risen. He is Risen indeed. ✝️

It looked like loss.
It felt like silence.
It seemed like the end.

But even in the darkness, God was working.

Good Friday is the story of a love so deep, it chose the cross for us.

At the 15th Annual Gala & Golf Event, we were reminded what’s possible when purpose driven partners come together in true alignment.

The Tim Tebow Foundation defines the Most Vulnerable People as those often overlooked: abandoned, trafficked, orphaned, or living with disabilities and profound medical needs. Through our partnership, that mission extends into the Peruvian Amazon, where Scalpel At The Cross serves patients living with untreated musculoskeletal conditions and limited access to care.

In ways only the Lord can orchestrate, this partnership is helping bring surgical care to places it has never been accessible, restoring mobility while building a sustainable model that cares for the whole person over time through the Miracle Campus.

When faith, urgency, and mission align, the impact extends far beyond what any one organization could accomplish alone.

What a powerful weekend at the Tim Tebow Foundation Gala celebrating our shared vision to reach the world’s most vulnerable people.

In Peru, that means standing alongside patients, our “MVPs, who are suffering from untreated musculoskeletal conditions, often without access to even the most basic surgical care.

Through our partnership, Scalpel At The Cross is doubling down on impact that is both physical and spiritual—healing bones, restoring dignity, and sharing the Gospel in the Peruvian Amazon.

What makes this partnership so edifying is a deep alignment in faith, urgency, and action, delivering real, lasting impact in places too often overlooked. We are so grateful.

German’s story is one of patience. Almost 3 years ago, German sustained a proximal femur injury from a car that ran over his leg. He later underwent surgery at a local hospital. The surgery was unsuccessful and in January of 2024, he slipped and fell which worsened his state of being, setting him back tremendously.

By the time of the August 2024 Scalpel campaign, he was facing complications from failed implants and a nonunion of the femur. He was immediately scheduled for a revision surgery, which involved a complex femoral reconstruction with bone grafting. However, just as our staff was preparing for surgery, an emergency case arrived at the hospital, causing German’s procedure to be postponed until the November 2024 campaign.

Without a word of complaint, German waiting 4 months and returned in November 2024 for surgery, showing deep gratitude with an unwavering smile on his face. Today, he's standing on both legs, with his children always by his side.
