You may have noticed on social media that many people try to make mental illness funny.

People suffering from mental illness are trying to raise awareness of how serious and prevalent it is. Turning mental health into jokes diminishes the problem and the people experiencing it. Would you make a funny campaign about Cancer?

People suffering from any kind of mental illness are not having fun. People suffering from mental illness need support, not entertainment, so let’s be part of that support, part of the solution.

If you need to be funny go write comedy. If you want to be a comedian or entertainer, get out of the mental health field and go be a lounge act.

Reactive depression is caused by a major event such as divorce, bankruptcy, death, etc.

Minimizing it can be dangerous. It can cause the person to feel unheard and alone, worsening the situation, and leading to feeling hopelessness, desperation, and su***de.

The best thing we can do is treat all depression as equal, and support the person suffering through it with the same intensity of care, compassion, and urgency. It could save their lives.

Depression damages the brain and damages our self-concept, our self-esteem, our relationships, and our careers...

We begin to feel like victims like we’re broken.

That’s paradoxical because people with depression are stronger than anyone. Living with depression demands courage — just to continue to live — that people without it will never know.
So, stop seeing yourself as weak. If you were weak, you would not be alive. You would not be reading this.

There absolutely is a difference between the two.

The person that has become addicted to gambling has crossed the line into a physiological condition.

He or she has become addicted to releasing high amounts of chemicals in the brain responsible for feelings of pleasure.

When the chemicals cease to flow in high amounts the addicted person experiences the opposite effect - they feel dissatisfied, sad, and even depressed.

A recreational gambler feels these feelings temporarily but can continue their day not constantly thinking about gambling or obsessing over when their next gambling opportunity will be. They CAN just walk away.

Ultimately, the dynamics of gambling addiction are similar to the dynamics of drug and alcohol addictions just with a different stimulant.

Although some of these may not seem ill-intended, they are hurtful and counterproductive for someone suffering from depression.

Here are some things that can be more helpful:

I’m here to listen if there’s something you want to talk about?
What can I do to help?
Do you want to talk about it?
I’m sorry you’re going through this.
That sounds really difficult.
Are you looking for input or do you just want me to listen?
I’m here for you.
What do you need right now?
Do you need some space?

Are there other questions or statements that you’ve been presented with that you found either helpful or unhelpful?

We’d love for you to share with us so that we can spread awareness and help support you and our community.

There have been many instances that we have seen recently of seemingly happy people taking their lives. It has left many in shock and utter disbelief.

About 1.5% of the US adult population suffers from Dysthymia. It is a chronic, low-grade type of depression (also referred to as “high-functioning depression).

It often goes undetected and untreated. In fact, some don’t even realize that they are depressed. They often think that it’s just “normal” to feel that way.

To the individual suffering with Dysthymia, it adds an underlying tinge of sadness to everything. They are in a constant state of feeling sad and it strips them of their ability to feel pleasure.

They could have everything they could have ever wanted, be incredibly successful, be surrounded by people that truly love them and still not be able to feel enjoyment or happiness.

It leaves them feeling hopeless and unproductive and it is both mentally and physically exhausting and can become dangerous if left unaddressed.

To the untrained eye, it could be hard to detect but a professional can take the necessary steps to identify if it truly is just normal emotions, or if there’s a bigger underlying issue.

If this sounds familiar to you or sounds very much like a loved one, feel free to reach out. We can guide you through the steps you need to take to help you feel whole and find enjoyment.

Nothing compares to the importance of the work that you do in therapy because that is the foundation for absolutely EVERYTHING else in your life.

Discussing your biggest discomforts, exploring your deepest fears, digging up feelings that you’ve buried for so long… it’s hard. There is no way to sugar-coat it.

BUT the reality is that we have to go through the hard parts to find long-lasting relief.

Are the hard parts holding you back from building the life you want and that you deserve?
