Regarding Damar Hamlin: the likely reason why there is no update on his condition is that is in the midst of what is known as a Post Cardiac Arrest Hypothermia Protocol. Each hospital will have its own specific protocol, but in general, ice packs and/or cooling blankets are applied to various areas of the body and the core temperature is lowered to a target temperature of 33 degrees centigrade for 24 hours. During that time period, he would be heavily sedated and closely monitored. The reason for hypothermia is to slow the body’s metabolic activity and reduce inflammation in the brain. Given that his cardiac arrest occurred late on Monday night, the 24 hours of cooing would have been completed last night, around midnight, and rewarming gradually occurred today. The sedation will begin being weaned around 12PM on Wednesday after he is fully rewarmed. Unless he spontaneously wakes up and is without residual injury, it is impossible to give any assessment of his neurologic prognosis before he is fully rewarmed and off sedation for 24 hours. I suspect there will be some update provided by tomorrow morning. In the event that there is no update, by tomorrow, it would raise the level of concern for incomplete recovery.
Dr. Allen Stewart, a cardiothoracic surgeon at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital in Coconut Grove, said he believes he knows what led to Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest.
