Nobody talks about the inner thigh after 50.
But here’s the truth: your adductors are the unsung heroes of how you walk, how you stabilize on uneven ground, and how you get up off the floor without grabbing the couch.
Weak adductors = wider gait, less hip stability, more groin pulls, and a higher fall risk. Research shows adductor and abductor strength should be roughly equal to your body weight for balanced, functional movement.
The cable hip adduction is one of the best exercises to rebuild that strength — at any age.
Here’s how to do it right:
— Keep your hips level. If your pelvis tilts or hikes when you pull the leg across, you’re using your obliques and lower back, not your inner thigh. Square hips, clean reps.
— Control the eccentric. Let the cable pull your leg out slowly and under tension. That stretch under load is where real strength is built — don’t just let it snap back. Older joints need controlled motion, not momentum.
— Skip the foot rotation cue. You may see advice to turn your foot outward for “maximum contraction.” The science doesn’t fully support this for cable adduction. Your adductor longus actually acts as an internal rotator, so external rotation may reduce its engagement. Keep a neutral foot and focus on squeezing through the full range of motion.
3 sets of 10-15 reps per side. Slow and intentional.
Your inner thighs aren’t vanity muscles. They’re longevity muscles.
Train them like it.
