Born with a rare congenital heart defect, Madison underwent open-heart surgery at Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute just days after birth. Despite facing multiple procedures throughout her childhood, she persevered with hope and joy.

Now, inspired by the care she received, Madison is pursuing a career as a pediatric cardiac ICU nurse to help children on the same journey she once walked.

Her story is a testament to the expert care and compassion at Nicklaus Children’s that changes lives. 💕

In this 75 Years of Hope — Voices from Our Community video, we share Brian May’s family journey.

Born with a defect in her esophagus, Brian’s daughter was unable to eat on her own. Thanks to the team at the Nicklaus Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Brian’s daughter was able to learn how to properly feed. Today, she is thriving as a freshman in high school and continues to find ways to give back to other NICU babies like her.

Brian, a proud father and dedicated community leader is deeply grateful for the care his daughter received at Nicklaus Children’s. His family’s journey is a testament to the strength of hope, resilience, and the impact of compassionate care.

When Jalen’s knee gave out during a basketball game, what seemed like a minor injury turned into a troubling issue. After visiting Nicklaus Children’s Orthopedic, Sports Medicine & Spine Institute, Jalen was diagnosed with discoid meniscus in both knees, a condition that could have ended his basketball dreams.

Thanks to Dr. Craig Spurdle and the sports medicine team, Jalen underwent surgeries and then physical therapy at the Nicklaus Children's Dan Marino Outpatient Center to restore his strength and mobility. Today, he’s back on the court, hitting nothing but net and competing in regional tournaments!
