As we round out our 75th Year of Hope, we would like to celebrate with a video series, Voices from Our Community — spotlighting life-changing Nicklaus Children’s stories from community leaders.

Today, we share PJ Campbell’s powerful journey.
Born with congenital heart failure, PJ underwent a Blalock shunt and two open-heart surgeries — one as a child and again at 21 — all at Nicklaus Children’s.

Today, as VP of Government Affairs at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, PJ is a champion for our community and a testament to the lifesaving care that’s defined our 75-year legacy.

We’re grateful to be part of his story — and inspired by the hope he carries forward.

Innovation in action at Nicklaus Children’s!

Our Heart Institute team recently used virtual reality (VR) technology to guide a life-changing procedure in the Cath Lab for a 3-month-old baby. Using a VR headset with the heart’s 3D image visible in real time, our specialists were able to perform the procedure without the need for angiograms, helping reduce radiation exposure and improve precision.

At age 5, Carmella was diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anemia and needed a bone marrow transplant to survive. Her 3-year-old brother Angelo was her perfect match. Thanks to the expert care at Nicklaus Children’s, Carmella received her transplant and is now back to playing soccer and sharing an even stronger bond with her brother. 🌟

Today, Carmella and Angelo hold a heartfelt “Thank You” sign, celebrating the generosity of those who make stories like theirs possible.

Nicklaus Children’s keeps innovating for children with heart defects!

We’re excited to announce a major milestone: our Heart Institute has performed the first pediatric Ozaki heart valve replacement in Florida, right here at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The Ozaki procedure is an innovative surgical technique where a child’s own tissue is used to recreate a new aortic or pulmonary valve on a child born with a congenital heart defect. This approach may reduce the need for future valve replacements as the child grows — offering long-term benefits and improved quality of life.

This achievement reflects the expertise, collaboration, and dedication of our cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, and entire care team. Another step forward in delivering world-class, lifesaving care for children across our region and beyond.
