Last week, Swanson Center joined mental health leaders and advocates from across Indiana at the Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers’ 2026 Legislative Day — an important opportunity to bring the conversation about behavioral health directly to state leaders.

CEO Katie Jasnieski and Director of Clinical Services Christine Cuddeback represented our organization, meeting with legislators and partners to discuss the realities facing community mental health providers and the continued need for accessible, reliable care throughout Indiana.

The day included conversations inside the Statehouse, moments with fellow advocates, and discussions focused on strengthening the systems that support individuals and families across our region.

While mental health policy can feel complex, at its core it’s about people — and ensuring every Hoosier has the opportunity to receive the care they need. We’re proud to stand as advocates.

It’s not always easy to know how to respond when someone is having a difficult time. With a little guidance, though, reaching out can feel more natural and supportive.

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide-prevention training helps everyday community members recognize signs that someone may be struggling, respond in a caring way, and connect them with appropriate support. The goal is simple: help people feel more confident offering compassion and help when it matters most.

Black History Month invites us to reflect not only on achievement and progress, but also on health, healing, and equity. Mental health challenges affect people from every background, yet research continues to show that Black Americans often face greater barriers to care and are less likely to receive the support they need. Recognizing those gaps is an important step toward building stronger, healthier communities.

Taking care of mental health is not separate from honoring history — it is part of sustaining resilience, supporting families, and creating space for future generations to thrive. Conversations, access to care, and community understanding all play a role in that progress.

If this month encourages even one honest conversation about mental well-being, that is a meaningful step forward.

This Super Bowl weekend, we're sharing an article offers an important reminder: even elite athletes face mental health challenges, and speaking openly about them helps reduce stigma. In sports culture — where strength is often expected at all times — mental health concerns can still be misunderstood or overlooked, which may prevent people from seeking support.

Stories like these remind us that mental wellness matters at every level, from professional athletes to everyday communities. If you have a moment before the big game, this piece is worth a thoughtful read.
