In honor of American Heart Month and Valentine/s Day, here are some things that are good for your heart:

Hugs and kisses can promote the release of oxytocin which can help lower blood pressure and decrease your heart rate.

Healthy habits for your heart, like eating a nutritous diet and exercising, are easier to maintain with a partner. Maybe go for a walk after dinner.

Pet owners may have lower rates of cardiovascular disease, due to their relaxing presence. Don't forget to snuggle your pets too!

When strolling through the candy aisle remember that dark chocolate (70-85% cocoa) is rich in antioxidants like flavanols. These are good at lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow.

Bonus: Some people can synchronize their heart rates by staring into another person's eyes for 3 minutes. Try it at home for a fun experiment!

As we continue to brave the Northeastern weather, here are some friendly reminders to continue your winter wellbeing:

• Stretching and doing light exercises can help increase blood flow and warm up chilly bodies. It can also help prevent injuries when done before more physical tasks like shoveling snow or stacking firewood.
• Before you venture outside, dress in warm layers. Materials like polyester and wool help wick moisture away from the body. Meanwhile cotton and rayon absorb moisture and may make you feel colder.
• Extreme cold and wind can make skin feel fragile and can cause wind burn. Remember to moisturize!
• Safe shoveling techniques like keeping your knees bent while lifting, avoiding excessive twisting, and taking your time can help protect your body from injury.
• Dehydration in the winter can be dangerous. Drink plenty of water, herbal tea, or broth.
• A balanced diet, especially foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin D, can help boost your immunity and fuel your body for the long winter months.
