Earlier this week, we attended the 9th Annual Marion County Emergency Preparedness Expo, hosted by the Center for Independent Living of North Central Florida.

Events like this are a useful reminder that emergency planning for individuals with vision loss involves considerations that standard preparedness resources often do not cover: accessible alert systems, vision-specific emergency kits, and transportation planning for those who do not drive are all areas where having a plan ahead of time matters.

FLVBS works with clients throughout Florida on independent living skills that include practical emergency preparedness. If you or someone you know could benefit from that kind of support, we are available.

Emergency preparedness looks different for individuals with vision loss, especially considering even the tiniest of details matter. Having a plan means knowing where your documents are, what vision-specific supplies belong in your kit, and how to receive alerts accessibly.

At FLVBS, independent living instruction includes practical emergency planning as part of what we provide to clients throughout Florida. To that end, our partners at Hadley thankfully offer free workshops covering emergency preparedness strategies designed specifically for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Their resources are self-paced, fully accessible, and available at no cost.

February is Low Vision Awareness Month. Low vision is more common than many people realize, and it affects individuals in different ways at every stage of life.

With the right tools, training, and support, low vision does not have to limit independence. At FLVBS, we focus on practical outcomes like helping individuals build the skills, confidence, and systems they need to read, write, work, and manage daily life independently.

Awareness matters most when it leads to real solutions and long-term independence.

Today we recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day and reflect on the ongoing work of advancing equity, access, and dignity for all.

For individuals who are blind or visually impaired, independence is closely tied to access, opportunity, and the ability to participate fully in education, employment, and community life. At FLVBS, our work is centered on supporting independence through practical training, assistive technology, and individualized support that meets people where they are.

Progress is built through action, access, and systems that allow individuals to move through the world with confidence and choice.

Vision loss looks different for everyone. Some individuals experience gradual changes, while others adjust suddenly due to illness or injury. Because of this, effective support cannot be one-size-fits-all.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, our work is centered on helping individuals regain and maintain independence in their daily lives. That may involve assistive technology, independent living skills, or structured training, but the focus is always on outcomes, not tools alone. Independence means being able to make choices, navigate routines, and engage confidently at home, at work, and in the community.

We work with each individual to identify barriers, explore practical solutions, and build systems that support long-term independence based on their goals and environment.

Adjusting to vision loss often involves more than learning new skills. It also means figuring out how to talk with family, friends, and others about what is changing and what support looks like moving forward.

Our partners at Hadley offer an Adjusting to Vision Loss workshop series that focuses on these real-life conversations, like explaining vision changes clearly, setting boundaries, asking for help when needed, and helping others understand how to offer support without taking over.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, we reinforce this work through individualized training, assistive technology support, and practical strategies that help clients apply these concepts in daily life. Together, these resources support both skill-building and confidence as individuals adjust to vision changes.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, we work with individuals to explore wearable vision solutions and determine whether these tools align with daily routines and long-term goals.

Devices like eSight Go use a lightweight, head-mounted display to enhance remaining vision, allowing users to see faces, read signs, and navigate environments with greater confidence.
