February is Low Vision Awareness Month. Low vision is more common than many people realize, and it affects individuals in different ways at every stage of life.

With the right tools, training, and support, low vision does not have to limit independence. At FLVBS, we focus on practical outcomes like helping individuals build the skills, confidence, and systems they need to read, write, work, and manage daily life independently.

Awareness matters most when it leads to real solutions and long-term independence.

Today we recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day and reflect on the ongoing work of advancing equity, access, and dignity for all.

For individuals who are blind or visually impaired, independence is closely tied to access, opportunity, and the ability to participate fully in education, employment, and community life. At FLVBS, our work is centered on supporting independence through practical training, assistive technology, and individualized support that meets people where they are.

Progress is built through action, access, and systems that allow individuals to move through the world with confidence and choice.

Vision loss looks different for everyone. Some individuals experience gradual changes, while others adjust suddenly due to illness or injury. Because of this, effective support cannot be one-size-fits-all.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, our work is centered on helping individuals regain and maintain independence in their daily lives. That may involve assistive technology, independent living skills, or structured training, but the focus is always on outcomes, not tools alone. Independence means being able to make choices, navigate routines, and engage confidently at home, at work, and in the community.

We work with each individual to identify barriers, explore practical solutions, and build systems that support long-term independence based on their goals and environment.

Adjusting to vision loss often involves more than learning new skills. It also means figuring out how to talk with family, friends, and others about what is changing and what support looks like moving forward.

Our partners at Hadley offer an Adjusting to Vision Loss workshop series that focuses on these real-life conversations, like explaining vision changes clearly, setting boundaries, asking for help when needed, and helping others understand how to offer support without taking over.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, we reinforce this work through individualized training, assistive technology support, and practical strategies that help clients apply these concepts in daily life. Together, these resources support both skill-building and confidence as individuals adjust to vision changes.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, we work with individuals to explore wearable vision solutions and determine whether these tools align with daily routines and long-term goals.

Devices like eSight Go use a lightweight, head-mounted display to enhance remaining vision, allowing users to see faces, read signs, and navigate environments with greater confidence.

January is Braille Literacy Month. For many individuals who are blind or visually impaired, braille is a key part of reading, learning, and building independence. While technology continues to expand access to information, braille remains a critical tool that helps individuals build strong literacy skills across all stages of life.

At Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services, we support braille literacy through individualized instruction, assistive technology, and collaboration with families and educators to ensure meaningful access to learning.

As the year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank the individuals, families, partners, and communities who trust Florida Visually Impaired and Blind Services.

Throughout the year, we have worked alongside Floridians who are blind or visually impaired to build practical skills, explore assistive technology, and strengthen independence at home, at work, in school, and in the community. That work continues into the new year with the same focus on individualized support and meaningful outcomes.

As we look ahead to January, we are excited to share new partnerships, technology spotlights, and resources designed to support independence and confidence in everyday life.

Thank you for being part of our community. We look forward to continuing this work together in the year ahead.

As winter break begins, we encourage everyone to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the season at a pace that feels right.

For individuals who are blind or visually impaired, staying mindful of changing routines, busy environments, and travel plans can help make the break safer and more enjoyable. Small steps like planning ahead, keeping familiar routines when possible, and allowing extra time for transitions can go a long way.

From all of us at FLVBS, we wish you a safe, restful, and peaceful winter break!

FLVBS works with individuals to build practical routines that support independence year-round, but during the holidays, daily routines often change. For individuals with vision loss, preparing ahead can make the season feel more manageable and enjoyable.

Simple strategies like organizing cooking tools before gatherings, labeling gifts or food items, keeping walkways clear for guests, and establishing quiet spaces can help reduce stress during busy holiday moments. These skills support safety, confidence, and independence at home and are a core part of the independent living training we provide across Florida.
