When it’s so cold your breath freezes to your whiskers!

In a recent study by JAMA Pediatrics studies showed that 32-42% of teens reported that the number one thing that got in the way for depression treatment was their parents. 😳

Please approach these conversations with your teens. Even if it’s hard, go to their room, show you can LISTEN, validate their feelings even if they feel trivial to your adult brain. If your teen is always in their room, always sleeping, always grouchy, always distant - don’t just roll your eyes and think 🙄 “teenagers”. They don’t want to be isolated. It’s really hard to have no one to talk to. They really don’t want to be “left alone”. If it can’t be you they talk to - show them it’s ok to seek support! Make an appointment with a therapist, encourage them to talk to their school counselor, a trusted teacher, Stable Grounds, or a family doctor if medication might be needed. 32- 42% that’s way too close to half. Don’t be a barrier because you don’t know what to do, show them we all need help sometimes. Even adults, even parents. 🫶🏼

With animals to care for in this weather - we are getting grumpy and tired. BUT it also means the crews have been coming to work inside on our arena upgrades. Slowly and surely we have been good stewards with our blessings - and donations have allowed us to add insulation and heat!! Hoping garage doors with windows, and big fans are also on the horizon. This will increase our opportunities to help more people year round. The “cold” arena will no longer be cold!!!

The animals are warm and safe thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers. This gives us all an opportunity to practice...

In our sessions we look for SPUDs with the horses actions. Shifts. Patterns. Unique. Discrepancies. This right here is very unique!! What does that mean for the clients story? What is it the horse is trying to show us?

In any one session we are watching for metaphors, the SPUDs, what the students say and do, and how we can help all those parts coming together into a therapeutic message towards our goals.

It’s not always easy to explain in words how intuitive equines are, or how they respond to the energy of the kid in the moment. We see it 8 hours a day. But these two pictures are a GREAT example - taken less than 30 minutes a part. Same general objective. Same donkeys. Two very different postures elicited two very different responses from the herd. In one they evoked frustration and the other comfort. But it was what the donkeys were responding TO that was noteworthy. Being able to feel it in the moment is the power of this work.
