We are inviting the greater Middlebury area to come together to understand how well the region serves people living with dementia and to explore how we can improve opportunities and outcomes for individuals with dementia by working together to advance dementia friendly services and sensitivities across all sectors of our communities.
The prevalence of dementia is rapidly increasing across the US. The number of people living with dementia is expected to double for people ages 75-84 and triple for those over age 85. Younger onset Alzheimer’s, occurring in people under age 65, is also on the rise.
Recognizing that the percentage of Vermont’s older population is continuing to increase, we launch this endeavor with the goal of raising awareness about daily challenges those living with dementia face both in their homes and while engaging within the broader community. We believe that by convening an action team dedicated to preparing all sectors of our community to address the growing opportunities and needs faced by people with dementia, we will indeed advance dementia friendliness in our region.
The initial phase of our work involves collecting input from those who have firsthand experience with dementia within their family as well as inviting those who, because of their role as a community leader, may also be able to offer valuable perspectives in understanding community needs and priorities for building a more supportive environment for those living with dementia.
Will you assist us in advancing Phase 1 of Dementia Friendly Middlebury (DFM)?
1. Complete and return the attached short survey.
2. Share this information with others in your network who you feel could provide valuable insights or who might wish to join us in advancing a dementia friendly region.
The initial conveners of this community-enhancing vision are two Middlebury College students (Neuroscience majors) from their Spring term Community-Connected Learning course who are teaming with EastView at Middlebury (a nonprofit senior living community) to build a community-wide framework for DFM&B. We are tapping the wealth of resources provided by Dementia Friendly America to guide our local work here in Addison County.
Thank you for completing our questionnaire; we look forward to collaborating with you on behalf of Dementia Friendly Middlebury.
