You may have heard that you need a prescription from your doctor for a COVID shot. Governor Hochul signed an executive order authorizing the administration of 2025-2026 COVID vaccine at pharmacies. A non-patient specific order was signed so you do not need a prescription from us to have your COVID vaccine administered via pharmacy.

We do NOT have COVID vaccines available at our office.

Currently in New York State vaccination against COVID is recommended for adults:
-over 65 yrs
-ages 19-64 with risk factors for severe COVID-19
-ages 19-64 at higher risk of exposure (healthcare workers, congregate care settings)
-ages 19-64 who are household contacts of persons at high risk of severe disease

While federal actions may restrict eligibility for adults with no underlying conditions, providers may administer the vaccine to individuals consistent with "off label" use, by a patient-specific order. (This means you can get one if you don't fall into the categories with a prescription from your doctor-- BUT-- be aware, your insurance may not cover it, as it is "off-label" use)

If you plan on getting a COVID shot, please verify coverage with your insurance provider.

Some examples of conditions that increase a person's risk of severe COVID-19:
-Cancer
-Dialysis
-Cirrhosis
-Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
-Cystic Fibrosis
-Diabetes (types 1 & 2)
-Down's syndrome
-Epilepsy
-HIV
-Coronary artery disease
-Heart failure/Cardiomyopathy
-Dementia
-Parkinson's disease
-Obesity (BMI over 30)
-Smokers
-Long term oral steroid use (Prednisone)

Team Spotlight: Remembering Nancy Albanese

For more than four decades, Nancy Albanese served as a dedicated recovery room nurse at Medina Memorial Hospital, leaving a lasting mark on the lives of patients, colleagues, and the entire Medina community.

Nancy’s nursing career was more than just a job—it was a calling. Known for her calm demeanor and caring nature, she was the nurse patients trusted most as they awoke from surgery. Colleagues remember her as a mentor, role model, and friend. “She lived and breathed this hospital,” said Kim Gray, chief nursing officer for Orleans Community Health, who first met Nancy as a child and later turned to her for guidance during nursing school. “After my grandparents died, Nancy became like a grandmother to me.”

Born in Lockport in 1930, Nancy graduated from Johns Hopkins University and later earned her RN from Genesee Community College. She worked for many years with Dr. Angelo Leone before joining Medina Memorial, where she remained a vital presence until her retirement at age 84. Even after retiring, patients continued to ask about her.

Outside of the hospital, Nancy was deeply involved in the community. She was a member of the Twigs, Catholic Daughters, Beta Sigma Phi, and Tuesday Club. She also served on the boards of Hospice of Orleans and the Medina Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Nancy Albanese passed away in 2019 at age 89, but her legacy of compassion, mentorship, and community spirit lives on. She will always be remembered as the heart of the recovery room—and a beloved figure in Medina.

Happy Nurses Week to the past and present team members of Orleans Community Health.

Have you made plans to attend the April 5 Wellness Fair? If you're thinking about taking advantage of the preventative screenings in the Laboratory, here is some more information. Thanks to a partnership with the Greater Rochester Health Foundation, you can take advantage of these screenings at no cost (they're free!) to better understand your health. Here’s what’s included:

Hemoglobin A1c: This test measures your average blood sugar levels and it’s especially important for monitoring diabetes and pre-diabetes.

PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen): A blood test that measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate. It’s used to help detect prostate cancer or other prostate-related issues in men.

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): This test measures how well your thyroid is working. It helps to diagnose thyroid conditions like hypothyroidism (low thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

Cholesterol: A blood test that measures the levels of different types of cholesterol in your blood. It’s crucial for assessing heart health and the risk of cardiovascular disease.

These tests can be done in just one 15-minute appointment – whether it’s for a single test or multiple tests at once. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to take proactive steps toward better health!

Join us for these preventative screenings, radiology screenings, clinics (lumps & bumps, pediatrics/child safety, and hearing tests), and so much more!

We are coordinating an MMR Vaccine Clinic in partnership with Harvest House on Thursday, 3/13 from 10 am-2 pm.

Measles outbreaks are happening in several U.S. states. This highly contagious viral infection can cause high fever, rash, pneumonia, brain swelling and death.

The MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is very safe and highly effective at preventing these diseases. Adults should get at least one MMR dose if they do not know their immunity status. People born before 1957 are presumed to have immunity. Children routinely get 2 doses of MMR as part of their recommended childhood vaccine series before school entry.

Call (716) 856-2400 or (716) 858-2373 to schedule or ask questions. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. There is no cost for this vaccine. If you have health insurance, please bring your card with you.
