I serve a lot of young women, and this is just a reminder to ALL of you, that all of these posts and reminders to do self exams aren't "just for older women". They are for YOU, no matter your age. I had a friend pass away at the age of 29 from breast cancer. She was very in tuned with her body and asked her doctor about a lump she felt. The doctor assured her she was too young to be concerned for cancer, so she trusted the medical advice and didn't put urgency into getting it checked immediately. So yes, all of these Pinktober posts are for you as well!
As a physical therapist who works with survivors, I see the ongoing impact that treatments can have — from breast and arm lymphedema, to scar tightness, pain, and changes in mobility. These challenges are real and deserve care and attention, because the challenges do not end when the treatments end.
Your medical team may not always mention providers who operate out of network, often because of cost considerations — but every patient deserves to know all of their options. Having a physical therapist that you can turn to for continued support for lymphedema management, can make a world of difference. It can help prevent flare-ups and complications that can lead to even greater emotional and financial stress in the future.
If you’re experiencing lingering effects from breast cancer treatments, know that you’re not alone and there is help available!
