Connecticut Blood Center (CTBC) is the primary supplier of blood and blood products to patients being cared for in more than 11 Connecticut hospitals. CTBC operates a hospital services blood storage depot from our Connecticut center so we can quickly and reliably get urgent or unexpected orders to local hospitals. CTBC is operated by Rhode Island Blood Center, a division of New York Blood Center,

When he was no longer able to donate blood due to medication, Mike found another way to give back — and has been making an impact ever since.

Since 2012, he has volunteered as a blood pickup driver with Connecticut Blood Center, helping ensure lifesaving donations safely reach patients in need. Along the way, he’s enjoyed getting out into the community, visiting places he otherwise wouldn’t see, and meeting incredible people who share the same mission.

And he’s rarely alone on the road — his 12-year-old dog Annie rides along for every single pickup, never missing a chance to help save lives too (and bring some extra smiles along the way!) 🐾

From recipient to donor, Jeff's story comes full circle ❤️

Jeff knows firsthand the power of blood donation. After receiving multiple transfusions during his battles with leukemia and lymphoma, Jeff has spent years giving back by hosting blood drives.

But this time was different. At his most recent drive, Jeff didn’t just help organize and recruit—he rolled up his sleeve and donated for the first time in nearly 10 years. After a successful bone marrow transplant and years in remission, Jeff recently became eligible to donate again, and he didn’t hesitate to give back.

“It is better to give than receive… I couldn’t donate for so long, but now that I can, I will continue to give. It could be you at any point in your life. I’m a prime example.”

Thank you, Jeff, for leading by example and reminding us all why donating blood matters.

Debbie has been a dedicated blood and platelet donor for more than 35 years, beginning with her first donation in 1989 after being inspired by her grandmother's selflessness while battling leukemia.

“I realized I could give a little of myself to help someone else,” Debbie says. “It was my way of making sure my grandmother didn’t feel like a burden and that people who needed blood could still have it.”

Over the years, Debbie expanded her giving to platelets and has now donated more than 150 times, that's over 18 gallons of lifesaving blood products.

“When I donate, it’s two hours where I can do something purely for someone else,” she shares. “It reminds me how fortunate I am to be healthy enough to give. I feel lucky every time I donate.” ❤️

One by one. Bag after bag. “Thank you, donor.” Emily whispered those words after each of her 23 lifesaving transfusions.

Today, Emily celebrates March 31st as her “Alive Day” and as a longtime donor herself, that experience only deepened her commitment, because she knows what it means when time is running out.

Help shape someone’s tomorrow. Donate today. www.ctblood.org

The luck of the Irish might be on your side! ☘️

In 2022, the FDA lifted many Mad Cow disease (vCJD) travel restrictions, meaning people who spent time in Ireland, France, or the United Kingdom between 1980–2001 may now be eligible to donate blood.

If you’ve been waiting for your chance to give, this might be it. Check your eligibility and help save lives this St. Patrick’s Day. 🍀

This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to recognize the incredible impact women have on the lifesaving mission of blood donation.

Did you know that nearly 55% of blood donors in the United States are female? Every day, women across our communities roll up their sleeves to help ensure hospitals have the blood they need for patients facing surgery, cancer treatments, trauma, and more.

Whether they’re donating themselves, encouraging friends and family to give, or volunteering at blood drives, women play a vital role in keeping the blood supply strong.

To all the women who give their time, compassion, and blood to help others, thank you for being lifesavers. ❤️

🚨 Connecticut Blood Center Declares a Blood Emergency 🚨

Last week’s historic winter storm cost our region more than 1,500 blood donations, forcing widespread drive cancellations, donor center closures, and travel disruptions across the state. Our region now has less than a two-day blood supply, well below the seven-day level needed to support local hospitals.

While regular operations have resumed, rebuilding the blood inventory will take time. Local patients—trauma victims, surgery patients, and those fighting cancer—are at risk.

Your donation can help close the gap. Schedule a donation near you today: ctblood.org
