Back to school season is notorious for gastrointestinal issues in the pediatric population known as irritable bowel syndrome. It is provoked by school pressure, stress, lack of bathroom time, inability to drink water on time and sedentary life. It takes a toll on nerves and muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. Constipation, diarrhea, sensation of acid burn, abdominal pain in particular in the morning before school, can lead towards thinking about irritable bowel.
So if heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, sensation of acid burn, abdominal pain bothers a child, toddler or infant consultation with pediatric gastroenterology will be helpful.

Does your well-fed, well taken care of baby cry for what seems like no reason? This is what is known as colic, a fright for many new parents. Some quick ways to help ease colic are to take a stroll with your baby, swaddle them, or try a warm bath. Most importantly, make sure it is not an allergy to their formula or to something his/her mother is exposed to and passes through her breast milk. A quick appointment with a pediatric gastroenterologist can help ease any of these concerns!

Newborns sleep for long stretches of time. However, sometimes fuss when put to sleep on their back. Do not give up and allow the baby to sleep on their tummy, as this sleeping position is linked to SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome. By swaddling your little one, you can make them more secure and comfortable on their back!

Newborns typically throw up in their first month of life because their tummies are new to digesting food. Many times, the baby simply eats too much or too fast. Frequent smaller feeding sessions will help prevent some post-feeding vomiting. If your baby vomits often or forcefully, let your pediatrician know!

What could this post possibly be about? What came from the deep? Fish of course! Besides being a great lean source of protein, fish such as salmon, sardine, Atlantic mackerel, cod, herring, lake trout, and tuna are wonderful sources of omega 3 fatty acids. These are wonderful for our health. They can help our eyes, our brains, help with ADHD symptoms, and fight inflammation. However, be sure to get fish from a good source to avoid fish that have consumed heavy metals such as mercury.

Ok so you probably know by now that my food isn't actually rotten, well it is... but on purpose! Fermented foods such as yogurt, unpasteurized sauerkraut, soft cheese, kefir, and sour pickles are a great way to get probiotics (good gut bacteria from food. These foods are fermented by these bacteria, and when you eat them they can populate your gut. This is actually excellent for your health. Science is now learning more and more about the benefits of a healthy microbiome such as reduced risk or obesity and diabetes. For more information about types of gut bacteria and how they can help you, simply look back at our gut bacteria week posts!

You heard that right. I cannot digest vegetables. "Oh man you shouldn't eat them then," you say? Well, bad news... you can't digest them either *Gasp*. But they are still an important part of our diets! As a gastroenterologist one of Dr. Treskova's favorite parts about vegetables, fruits too, is the fiber. Fiber is an indigestible carbohydrate found in plants and produce. Do not worry though, you can still digest everything but the fiber. It does not get broken down in our bellies and we p**p it out intact. Why is this a good thing? Dietary fiber increases the size of your stool and softens it. A bulky stool is easier to pass, reducing the possibility of constipation. If you have watery stools or diarrhea, fiber may help to solidify the stool because it absorbs water and bulks up the p**p. The soluble form of fiber also helps feed the good bacteria in your gut! Here are some lovely veggies to focus on for fiber: Carrots, beets, artichoke, and broccoli.

Today during food week we are examining fruits but not in the boring way you have heard of before. Have you ever heard of oxidation? This old truck is a great example of oxidation. The rust that the car is coated in is metal that has oxidized. Rust forms when iron and oxygen react in the presence of water or moisture in the air. "Ok, but what does this have to do with fruits? or my body for that matter?" Well, our body may not be made of metal but oxidation still occurs. Oxygen in the form of free radicals can bond to our DNA and proteins causing oxidative stress and damage. Here is the good news: Fruits!
I bet you have heard of antioxidants, well I bet you didn't know that they are good for you because of this reason! The antioxidants prevent this oxidative damage and keep you healthier longer.
Here are some great fruits to focus on: cranberries, red grapes, peaches, raspberries, strawberries, red currants, figs, cherries, pears, guava, oranges, apricots, mango, red grapes, cantaloupe, watermelon, papaya, and tomatoes.

Get excited! This week we are talking all about what certain types of food can help our bodies with. The best part is that food is a completely natural way of boosting your health! We are all about doing the most for our bodies with as little pharmacological intervention as possible. Luckily our doctor leverages the powerful effects of a healthy diet with her patients any chance she gets! (She is kind of a healthy eating maniac but you didn't hear that from me). Remember dietary advice is not one-size-fits-all, different bodies need different foods. Be sure to check with Dr. Treskova so she can help create your child's ideal diet for them!
