When we first get clean we are so grateful to wake up without having to " get well" or nurse a hangover. Everyone is clapping for us. Food tastes better. We are putting on a bit of weight etc...

Then bam!

I'm bored. I'm anxious. I'm depressed. The wreckage of my past has caught up with me. We don't necessarily want to use, but we don't want to live like this either.

What you are going through is a part of recovery that I call "Phase 2." They don't really prepare us for this in treatment . However, if we don't learn the skills to get past this phase then we are either destined for a long " dry drunk" or a life of poor relationships, financial instability and general unhappiness.

Been sober a bit? All finished with treatment?

Life still isn't what it's cracked up to be?

I can help.

Before we get clean and in those early months we often think . "Once I get clean everything will be better"

Well,as you know, everything is not better .

Yes ,lots of things have improved. However, often we still feel years behind our peers in things like parenting, budgeting and finances, emotional regulation and definitely RELATIONSHIPS .

During these first few years of recovery,after you have gotten used to the day-to-day of being clean, it is important to have someone to help guide you through the rest. We have a lot of catching up to do and often we do not have the skills or the knowledge to get our lives to where we want it to be.

Sometimes this leads people to give up and go back to what's comfortable. I've seen so many relapses after that 1st year.

It doesn't have to be that way. You just need guidance from someone who understands your past ,but also knows how to guide you to your future.
