Middletown Firefighters Local 336 wants to recognize Black History Month with highlighting the legacy of the Freedom House Ambulance Service — America’s first modern paramedic service. Founded in 1967 in Pittsburgh — just like our Steel City roots — Freedom House was staffed primarily by African American men and women who pioneered advanced pre-hospital emergency care and helped shape the EMS systems we rely on today.
Black history is not separate from American history — it is an essential part of it. From pioneers who helped build the fire service to the firefighters and officers serving today, Black professionals have played a vital role in advancing public safety, leadership, and community trust.
We are proud to have had several Black firefighters serve our community throughout our history, and we are honored to have dedicated Black members serving today.
This month is an opportunity to reflect, learn, and show appreciation for those contributions — past and present. It is also a reminder of the importance of unity, respect, and brotherhood within our department as we continue to serve the members of this fine city.
We honor those who broke barriers before us and remain committed to serving our community with excellence, equity, and compassion.
