THE REAL REASON WILDLIFE REHABBERS ASK YOU NOT TO FEED THAT BABY…

It’s not because we want to hog all the fun for ourselves, I promise. It’s because wild orphans aren’t typically healthy enough to digest food, when they are found.

Many are hypothermic. The body can’t even handle water when its core temperature is too low. All energy is going to crucial body functions in that state. If the body has to divert energy to digesting, - it will likely be fatal.

Many orphans are very dehydrated. Animals can’t digest properly when they are dehydrated. The body pulls water into the intestines to aid with digestion. If there isn’t any water to pull from, this could cause a domino affect of problems.

All wild baby animals require a specific diet and that diet generally isn’t available in local stores. Feeding the wrong formula could cause an upset stomach or worse.

All baby animals need specific amounts of formula calculated by their body weight. The percentage differs depending on the species.

Not every animal can drink from a bottle. The correct instrument must be used to prevent aspiration and over feeding.
Bring us a thin, dehydrated, hypothermic animal and we can probably save it. Feed that same animal before you bring it to us…there’s likely nothing we can do to bring it back.

So PLEASE, don’t feed any wild orphans that you have found this baby season. Keeping them warm is a huge help until you find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Here’s a little bit about the difference between grocery store melons and locally grown melons found at farmers markets:

The melons found at the grocery store are LSL melons (long shelf life). This is because LSL melons boast excellent field holding, harvest, shipping, and storage traits.

Reduced harvest time and minimal rejection at the retail level make the LSL type the ā€˜workhorse’ of the industry. Because melon flowers are pollinated over a period of weeks, the fruit do not all mature at the same time. TSL(traditional shelf life aka western shipper types) melons are harvested 8 to 10 times over a period of 10 to 14 days. Because ESL and LSL type melons have longer shelf lives, they can be held in the field and harvested in fewer passes. LSL type melon varieties are usually harvested in 2 to 4 passes.

The LSL type melons are characterized by the fact they do not ā€œslipā€ from the vine when mature but are instead cut off the vine when harvested. LSL melons are well-suited for extended transport and storage. They have very firm flesh which is really important for shipping.

The LSL melons reduce food waste due to less shrinkage in storage and shipping. However, with these benefits come challenges because they differ in flavor and aroma…LSL class melons lack aromatics (they don’t have the LUSCIOUS smell), they don’t have the beautiful golden exterior when ripe, and the ā€˜slip’ that melon eaters are used to. DON’T try to save seed from a grocery store melons.

LSL class melons are improving though as new varieties are bred. The ā€˜Ideal’ melons have improved flavor, aromatics, fruit color, and flesh freshness in LSL melons. The University of California-Davis’ study of the ā€˜Ideal’ melons found significantly more volatile organic compounds (aroma), remarkably higher and consistent Brix (sugars), and consistent flesh texture…BUT…

The melon most commonly found in locally grown situations are the TSL (traditional shelf life) Western shipper types. They are characterized by the fact that they ā€œslipā€ from the vine when mature and have the traditional golden yellow exterior at harvest. These two traits are how you know when the melon is mature and ready to harvest. Compare them to the LSL types that typically retain a greener cast to the shell at maturity and need to be cut from the vine.

Western Shippers have been virtually phased out of commercial production and replaced with LSL melon varieties. Although the quality and overall consumer preference of the Western Shipper is better than the LSL types, they do not hold up as well in shipping and cost significantly more to harvest.

Although modern melon breeders are improving the LSL class melons to achieve the good looks and flavors of the western shipper class, if you want a truly spectacular tasting melon, you’ll have to grow your own or go to a farm or farmers market to get them!

Heal Thyself Gardens

Holistic farming is feel-good farming.

The whole-earth approach wastes nothing and replenishes the environment. We use creative irrigation, rainwater capture, and no-till plots. The majority of our plant nutrients are homemade from farm animal manure and our own special variety of fermented teas full of microorganisms. So, you can feel good about supporting a healthy you AND a healthy Earth.

This type of farming keeps the ecosystem happy, vibrant and better able to naturally fight off pests. We never treat plants with harsh chemicals or additives. So, you can feel good about putting pure medicine into your body.

And, plants do best under pressure. That's why we stress ours alongside competitive vegetation like stinging nettles. The result? Concentrated potency unrivalled by any other production method. So, you can just plain feel good.
