Another program kicked off last evening at the Westfield Fire Dept. 21 students from eleven departments are beginning their career in the fire service and attended orientation for the Firefighter I/II Program. Instructors laid out what is expected from students in this program in order to not only gain their certifications at the culmination of class, but also how to prepare to be successful firefighters in their communities. Over the next seven months, these students will gather multiple times a week to learn everything they can about the fire service and build a foundation that will serve them for the rest of their fire service careers. By June, students will be able to sit for certification to the Firefighter II level.

Good luck to all of these new students. We are glad to have you on board!

Our thoughts are with the members of Guilford Professional Firefighters Local4177 and the family and friends of Firefighter Michael Terrio as they mourn the tragic loss of their brother recently. Firefighter Terrio was also a former student of the MCFS. We are here for all of you during this difficult time.

It is with great sadness that the Town of Guilford and the Guilford Fire Department announce the passing of Firefighter Michael Terrio, an active member of our department.

On the evening of Friday August 22nd, Firefighter Terrio was involved in a multi-vehicle accident. Despite the valiant efforts of medical personnel, he tragically passed away at the hospital.

Firefighter Terrio was a dedicated public servant who committed himself to protecting the residents of Guilford. His loss is deeply felt by his fellow firefighters, colleagues across town departments, and the entire Guilford community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family during this unimaginable time,” said Michael Shove, Guilford Fire Chief. “We ask the community to keep his loved ones in their hearts as we grieve the loss of a brother firefighter.”

The Guilford Fire Department will have peer support services available to assist members and staff in coping with this difficult loss.

Details regarding memorial arrangements will be shared once they are finalized in coordination with Michael’s family.

The Town of Guilford and Guilford Fire Department thank the community for its compassion and support as we honor the memory of Firefighter Michael Terrio.

Instructors and students were busy beating the heat in three of our programs this weekend!

Saturday and Sunday, instructors delivered our Truck Company Operations program to the East Hampton, CT Volunteer Fire Dept! This program involves all things truck company including a lecture/discussion about apparatus and placement before hitting the training ground for practical skills in aggressive primary search, forcible entry and ventilation tactics. Thanks to the Colchester Fire & Emergency Medical Services for the use of their training facility.

Additionally, congratulations to our Firefighter I students who completed their Certification Practical Skills Exam! All students passed the exam and move onto the written exam next week.

Students in the Chauffeur School Program worked their apparatus inspection and driving skills in the Q Endorsement module of the program at the East Haddam Fire Department.
