Talking about postpartum depression and anxiety should not be taboo! Many women struggle with postpartum mood disorders after having their babies but the good news is that there are many things that can be done to alleviate the heaviness of PPD/PPA.

✨Acknowledge your feeling and know you are not a bad mom.
✨ Reach out for help. There are many people who love you and want to see you do well.
✨ Skin to skin and bonding with baby will boost oxytocin which is a key player in PPD/PPA.
✨ Nourishment and sunlight will give your body the fuel and endorphins it needs.
✨Placental encapsulation can help with hormone balancing, mood regulation and milk supply.
✨Magnesium, B vitamins, passion flower, lemon balm, ashwaganda and sepia can all be great options when used with counsel from your care provider.
✨Seek a trained medical professional or therapist for counsel and medication. Taking medication is not a bad thing, and there should not be a stigma for doing what is best for your mental health.

You matter and your feelings are valid. Let’s support each other and pave the way to better postpartum mental health treatment and recognition. ❤️

Do you know how many calories you should be eating when pregnant?

This can be dependent on lifestyle but it is recommended to consume 2,600-3,000 healthy calories. 2,600-3,000 calories may seem steep but it’s been proven that by following the Brewer diet for pregnancy can reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia, anemia, hypovolemia and many deficiencies. It also promotes healthy weight gain outcomes as opposed to a calories restricted diet.

Eating a balanced diet full of nutrient dense foods to nourish your body is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy pregnancy and set yourself up for a healthy postpartum as well.

“You’re still pregnant?” 🫠

One of the biggest differences in midwifery care versus OB-GYN care is how we approach due dates.

Due dates are calculated off of Naegele’s rule using the first day of your last menstrual period, a 28 day cycle and saying you ovulated on day 14. But for most women, they’re normal cycle varies from this. Ultrasound can be more accurate early on for detecting due dates, but even still this is just a determination of calculated measurements.

Most women naturally go into labor between 38-42 weeks. About 4% or women actually have their baby on their due date.

For this reason, you should approach your due date as a range. It could be that day, but it could also be the 2 weeks following it as well. As long as mom and baby are doing well and there are no indications of distress or other medical history it is perfectly fine to be “overdue.”

Trust that your body and your baby know when the right time to come is. ❤️

🤰🏽 Five tips for a healthy pregnancy! 🤰🏽

During pregnancy there are so many things that change, most of which you don’t have control over. But the good news is there are ways that make pregnancy healthier and easier. ❤️

1. Eating a nourishing diet filled with lots of protein, good carbs and healthy fats. Most issues in pregnancy can be linked back to diet and nutrition.

2. Not all vitamins are made the same! A whole food vitamin is better absorbed and used by your body compared to a synthetic vitamin and therefore benefits you way more in the long run. It better fills the nutrient gaps in your diet by being bioavailable.

3. Exercise is a great way to feel stronger, more confident and can actually help alleviate those pregnancy aches and pains. Yoga and stretching are some great low impact ways to get your body moving. Plus, it helps prepare your body for labor.

4. Stress is the enemy of health. Stress negatively affects every body system and can even impact a pregnancy. Managing stress allows you to feel calm and present in your pregnancy, and allows your growing baby to flourish.

5. Sleeping 8-10 hours a day is ideal for a pregnant woman. Sleep rejuvenates your body and maintains energy levels. Let’s face it, you should rest while you have the chance!

How are you taking care of yourself during your pregnancy?

Hey, my name is Katie! Thanks for coming around my little corner of the internet.

I am currently in midwifery school attending Mercy in Action College of Midwifery expected to graduate in 2025. I have been a nurse since 2019. I have been married to my husband for 5 years and we have 2 sweet little boys.

My intention for this page is to share my student midwife journey, education for all things pregnancy, birth and postpartum and build a community centered around God’s design for womanhood. It is such a privilege to one day be able to serve families as their midwife.
