Read below for an inspiring story from Corporal Marshall Williams with Odessa PD and his relationship with Benjamin Hart, a talented SOTX athlete:
"I have been in Law Enforcement going on 15 years, all at the Odessa Police Department. Early on in my career I had always heard of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and never knew what it meant. I only knew we would send some officers across Texas and they would "Run". I would take part in the initial run at the PD where they would depart but that was it. I knew it had to deal with Special Olympics but nothing really else.
Over the past few years... I slowly started to get more involved in the actual LETR side of things--helping at bowling competitions, Tip-A-Cop, and track and field. After taking part in these local events, I was able to see the smiles on our local athletes as they competed and they were Rockstars!!
Fast forward to the Summer Games. This is where my true "Why" moment happened. I signed up for FUNdamental [Sports] not knowing anything about this and how it was going to change my life. I walked in with an open mind and heart. I was partnered with an athlete named Benjamin Hart from Tarrant County. Little did I know this athlete and his mother would change my life. Benjamin wowed me with what he was able to do... We competed in all the FUNdamental Sports and all he kept saying was "Gold Medal", smiled, cheered, had had the best time.
As this went on, we came to our last event, cycling. I was told by his mother that Benjamin had not been on a bike in SEVERAL years due to falling off one and being too scared to get on one again. I then talked to Benjamin and told him that I would be by his side the entire time and nothing bad would happen to him. It was at this moment that Benjamin got a smile on his face and agreed to ride the bike. Benjamin got on the bike I proceeded to push him around the course. It was then when I looked over at his mother and caretaker and saw they were crying. Upon seeing this, emotions came over me that still give me chills to this day. I began crying too! This moment was more than just riding a bike. This was a moment where Benjamin overcame his fear and became a SUPERSTAR! To think that I was part of something like this changed my life forever. Best part about it, Benjamin got his Gold medal. He also said I could have one too.
To this day, I have seen Benjamin and his family at [more SOTX events]... I was yelled at by his mother that "his officer is here." HIS OFFICER!!!
LETR and Special Olympics has become so much more to me than I would have ever imagined. The athletes I have met, stories we have exchanged, and friends I have made will be forever with me. We do not do this for recognition, awards, or any other accolades. We do this for our athletes. They are our heroes and superstars."
