A few days ago, Dr. Erin Adams was honored to speak with 64 wonderful mothers of the Young Men’s Service League Richmond, VA Chapter at the Midlothian Library.

Dr. Adams shared her unique path in women’s health—from nearly becoming an OBGYN and delivering babies early in her training, to serving as a Navy flight surgeon where she was often the only female provider on base. During those years, she ran women’s health clinics and developed a deeper understanding of the gaps many women face in receiving compassionate, evidence-based care.

Her experience caring for countless women eventually led her to specialize in vulvar dermatology, where she trained under national expert Dr. Libby Edwards in Charlotte, NC, and later co-ran a dedicated vulvar dermatology clinic alongside an OBGYN in Bethesda. Over time, she saw how many women struggled to find comprehensive care for concerns that cross specialties—and how important it is for patients to have a provider who truly understands this area of dermatology.

Dr. Adams also shared her personal “why.” Several years ago, she began experiencing symptoms she didn’t yet recognize as perimenopause, which motivated her to help women better understand what’s happening in their bodies and to make high-quality care accessible, ethical, and grounded in current medical guidelines.

Her talk covered essential topics every woman deserves clarity on, including:
• Perimenopause symptoms and early warning signs
• Hormonal transitions leading to menopause
• The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study
• Current evidence-based recommendations
• The FDA’s 11/10/25 announcement that it plans to withdraw the black box warning from estrogen within the next six months
• Risks, benefits, and modern options for hormone replacement therapy

Dr. Erin Adams recently attended the 2025 Virginia Dermatology Society meeting in Williamsburg, VA — a wonderful weekend of learning, connection, and fun!

The conference covered a wide range of topics including contact dermatitis, pediatric dermatology updates, alopecia, vulvar and oral diseases, and management of squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Dr. Adams also joined colleagues for the Play It Safe in the Sun 2-mile fundraising walk, and enjoyed casino night with her sister, local providers, and nationally recognized pediatric dermatologists Drs. Pride and Cohen. A special highlight was reconnecting with her Navy co-resident, Dr. Anis Miladi, now a Mohs surgeon at Hampton VA Medical Center.
