Most people celebrate CVP week with a wall in their facility, or a note of thanks amongst cardiovascular staff - we're taking those thanks and amplifying them with the ACVP digital gratitude wall. Not a real one, but as close as we can get! Wednesday, February 11 is "Wish I Knew" Wednesday - it's your chance to share what you wish you had known before you had to learn it in action. Black History Month: Racism Denied the Title—Not the Talent

Vivien Thomas helped pioneer early cardiac surgery in the 1940s. At Johns Hopkins, segregation and racism limited his access to formal credentials and recognition, yet he engineered and refined the systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt, a breakthrough that became the first widely successful surgical palliation for “blue baby” cyanotic heart disease. He designed and adapted instruments, perfected techniques in the lab, and coached surgeons step by step in the operating room.

Historically, although it bears Blalock and Taussig’s names, Vivien Thomas designed, refined, and operationalized the technique in the lab and was instrumental in translating it safely into the operating room.
