Keep those synapses firing today with crosswords, bingo, Pokeno, or Wii bowling! Did you know your brain has the amazing ability to “rewire” itself at any age? It’s called neuroplasticity, and at Brandermill Woods, we’re keeping those connections strong every day! We know that even at 90 your brain can sprout new branches (synapses) and reorganize its paths (neural networks). It just needs the right environment to do so. That’s where our activities calendar comes in. Try something NEW like a pottery
class, line dance class, or tai chi. Understand that the beginner “clumsiness” that you might feel is just your brain growing. Challenge of the month: Try doing a simple task (like brushing your teeth or holding your coffee cup) with your non-dominant hand. It might feel silly, but it’s a “workout” for your neurons!

What Can We Learn from Centenarians?
Author Dan Buettner, in partnership with National Geographic, studied regions of the world where people regularly live to 100 — known as the Blue Zones. These include parts of Italy, Greece, Costa Rica, Japan, and California. The common lifestyle factors include natural daily movement, a strong sense of purpose (ikigai), simple stress relief rituals, mostly plant based eating (and stopping at 80% full), deep family ties and social circles, and connections to faith or community. These practical lessons demonstrate how lifestyle choices can have a significant impact on aging. At Brandermill Woods, these simple Blue Zone principles come to life every day through connections, purpose and active living.

Beating the Winter Blues: Mental Health Tips for Shorter Days.
Winter means shorter days and less sunlight, which can impact serotonin levels. This can disrupt mood patterns, affect digestion, impact sleep routines and more. Luckily for residents at Brandermill Woods, the cold weather doesn’t limit social interaction and physical activity — both of which can increase serotonin levels! With community amenities like indoor therapeutic swimming pool, arts and crafts room, movie theater and woodworking shop to name a few, there is always something to do inside. With scheduled transportation to nearby shops, services and doctor appointments, errands can be completed easily and safely. Every month of the year, residents have a robust monthly calendar with many scheduled activities to encourage and support active aging and social engagement. When you’re surrounded by options, support and neighbors, winter feels a lot brighter.

January Is the Perfect Time to Reset Daily Routines.
The New Year naturally invites a reset. The pace slows after the holidays and schedules become more predictable. Use it to your advantage and focus inward on your health, comfort and consistency. The lifestyle at Brandermill Woods offers built-in structure and support to make changes easy and sustainable. Make sleep routines consistent — good sleep is strongly linked to brain health and immune function. Have movement goals each day — attend balance or fitness classes and stretch every day. Refresh your social routine and choose a few activities and clubs to keep up connections. Enjoy regular mealtimes, and make nutritious choices and take mindful portions. Resetting isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing things consistently. Check the calendar and see how the community can help with structure and support!

Did you know your brain continues to rewire itself throughout life — with a key shift around age 66? New research from the University of Cambridge identified key “turning points” at ages 9, 32, 66, and 83, marking distinct phases where the human rewires to support different ways of thinking over the average human lifespan. Dr. Alexa Mousley, who led the research, says, “We know the brain’s wiring is crucial to our development, but we lack a big picture of how it changes across our lives and why. What this means for the big picture and cognition as we age is still a mystery.” While scientists continue to question and find answers, we can choose to support brain health with small daily habits. This looks different for everyone, but it might include exercising your mind and body, eating a brain healthy diet, staying social, prioritizing sleep and managing stress. Check out the social calendar to see how you can participate in. more daily activities that support your brain health!
