π¬ Virginia OBGYN, Javaid Perwaiz of Chesapeake, was convicted on federal charges of performing medically unnecessary surgeries, including life-altering procedures like hysterectomies and improper sterilizations on scores of patients over nearly a decade.
More than 25 former patients testified at trial, and over 60 victim impact statements were submitted. Witnesses revealed that Perwaiz routinely used the word "cancer" to scare patients into unnecessary surgeries.
Patients were often unaware of the procedures being performed, with some referring to visits as "annual clean outs." In one case, a woman discovered years later that her fallopian tubes had been removed without her knowledge or consent, destroying her ability to have children.
In November 2020, Perwaiz was also convicted of 52 counts of health care fraud and false statements for procedures performed from 2010 through 2019. With over $20 million in losses to insurance programs, the government seized more than $2 million in assets, a Bentley, two properties, and medical equipment. In May 2021, Perwaiz was sentenced to 59 years in prison.
