🤎🌈 WE SHOWED UP AT THE CAPITOL.

Advocates from all over Virginia all in one room, all talking about what matters: the health, safety, and dignity of all but especially Black and Brown birthing people in Virginia.

Thank you to Governor Abigail Spanberger, Secretary of the Commonwealth Candi Mundon King, Speaker of the House Don Scott, Majority Leader Delegate Charniele Herring, Delegate Cousins, Delegate Margaret Franklin, and March of Dimes for championing the Momnibus and beyond.

But especially for standing with us when it counts — always. 👏🏽

She did everything right. She told them the seizures were getting worse. She asked for help.

Italia Fragasse was diagnosed with epilepsy at 19. She took her medication. She showed up to her appointments. She advocated for herself — especially while pregnant.

On October 30, 2025, a seizure took her life. And her son’s.

She was 21.

Italia — “Tt” to the people who loved her — was a daughter. A sister. A partner. A friend. But motherhood? That was her heart. She and Adrian were raising their baby girl, Ilaria, and preparing to welcome baby Adrian III in the new year.

She spoke up about the increase in seizures during her pregnancy.

And like too many Black women, her concerns were not met with urgency.

Nothing changed.

Adrian III should still be here.
Italia should still be here.

If you can, please donate to help cover funeral and burial expenses and ensure Italia and baby Adrian III are laid to rest with dignity and love.

Every share matters. Every dollar matters.

🌈 52.9% fewer cesareans.
🌈 57.5% less postpartum depression.
🌈 89% more likely to breastfeed successfully.

These aren’t just numbers — they’re proof that doula support saves lives and transforms birth experiences.

For Black and Brown birthing people, doulas aren’t a luxury. They’re a necessity. They’re advocates when the system fails us. They’re educators when information is withheld. They’re hands to hold when we’re navigating our individual reproductive health journeys.

Richmond has lost one of its most powerful voices for justice.

From 1998 to 2014, King Salim Khalfani was fearless. He confronted inequality in housing. He demanded better for our schools. He held politicians accountable when they failed our communities. He showed up—at protests, at council meetings, at the General Assembly—speaking truth to power every single time.

At Birth in Color, we know our work exists because leaders like King Salim fought first. His refusal to stay quiet in the face of systemic racism created space for organizations like ours to demand justice, to fight for Black communities, and to center the voices that have been pushed to the margins.

He mentored young leaders.
He inspired a generation.
He never backed down.

The Richmond NAACP’s JJ Minor said it perfectly: King Salim was the root, the trunk, and the crown. He wore that crown because he earned it—through decades of unwavering dedication to our community.

We carry forward the torch he lit.
We honor his legacy by continuing the fight.

Rest in power, King Salim Khalfani. 🤎

🖊️ ⭐️ Governor Spanberger just signed Virginia’s Reproductive Freedom Amendment, officially sending it to the ballot this November!! 🗳️

As a proud coalition member of , we’ve been fighting for this moment. Because reproductive justice isn’t just about access — it’s about protecting a spectrum of care our communities deserve.

Thank you to Majority Leader Delegate Herring and Senator Boysko for championing this amendment and putting the voices of Virginians first. We see your leadership and we don’t take it for granted. ✅

This is what we mean when we say dismantling barriers and building power. This is what happens when community shows up and STAYS LOUD. 👏🏽

Now the work shifts to US. We witnessed the signing. Now let’s seal it at the ballot box this November 2026 💙

⭐️ POLICY WIN: Congress just reauthorized two critical pieces of legislation.

The PREEMIE Reauthorization Act and the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act are now law.

💗 PREEMIE Act:
Funds research and prevention programs for preterm birth, which disproportionately impacts Black and Brown babies.

💗 Preventing Maternal Deaths Act:
Supports committees that investigate why birthing people are dying and creates policies to prevent future deaths.

WHY IT MATTERS
Every doula visit, every culturally culturally rooted care provider, every community-led solution we fight for gets stronger when policy backs it up.

This reauthorization means continued funding for programs that support all, but especially Black and Brown families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
