Each of us has an opportunity to grow in so many ways, no matter our age, ability, upbringing, or geography. The practice of yoga presents endless opportunities to tap into that growth potential. Even if you are interested in yoga simply for the workout, you will reap the benefits to body, mind, and spirit. The real magic begins when you show up for that 'workout' with intention and you practice l
ike you mean it. I first started taking yoga classes in 1993 without much awareness about the big picture and absolutely no idea about the history of yoga. My interest and dedication grew over the years to follow, to the point where Yoga Teacher Training became the obvious next step. I completed my first 200 hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training with the Sacred Seeds school of yoga in March 2014 under the guidance of Jacqui Bonwell, and became instantly inspired to share the many gifts of this practice with my local community, if not the world. Then in 2015, I began my journey into teaching Yin Yoga (with Sagel Urlacher) and learning the art of Myofascial Release Therapy (with John Barnes and others). Ongoing studies in the fascial science world have led me down some fascinating paths (with Gil Hedley, Tom Myers, Carol Davis, James Earls, and others). I have picked up bits and pieces of wisdom from other teachers over the years, much of which influences my how and what I teach. Most recently I've delved into the world of 'Detour' Yoga with Cecily Milne which has given me license to introduce more dynamic and functional movement into a yoga class. Something I always felt inspired to do but didn't have the language until completing her training in 2020. In my classes you can expect to move as well as to be still, to smile, and maybe even use your voice! You can also expect to be encouraged to embody postures on your own through cues and suggestions, helping you to connect with your inner wisdom about what the body needs in the moment. I will often define 'yoga words', so you won't feel like I'm talking another language. Bottom line, you will leave class with a new lens, which may be just enough to shift your perspective about your body and how it moves. Options will be provided for all levels, so classes are appropriate for new students and seasoned yogis alike. A few words of encouragement: As you explore this form of movement, your body will speak to you in new ways, which is only a sign of growth so don't let a little muscle soreness stop you from trying again! But it's also an opportunity to really tune into the body's response to the movement choices you make - listen carefully for clues that might indicate a specific position, pose, or stretch is not right for YOU. I look forward to having you in class. I invite your questions and concerns via private message to this page. I also encourage you to do your own research about fascia, yoga, and the mind-body connection wherever you feel inspired to look - be that in books, magazines, podcasts, webinars or Ted talks. Let the magic begin!
