Until Christmas, we will be sharing helpful tips for how to help your child with autism during the hustle and bustle of the holidays!

It's Christmas Eve!

Some of our kids don’t always enjoy opening presents. There are several reasons that might make a child resistant to opening presents; fear of the unknown, difficulty with fine motor tasks, and/or simply because it is different. Sometimes this can add extra stress to our families because they don’t want their child to appear rude and want to see their child enjoy their holiday. Here are some strategies that may help if your child is resistant to opening presents:

1. Practice! A few days before a holiday or birthday, wrap up one of your child’s favorite items or foods and have them open it. This provides practice and ensures that they will like the item inside the box, which may help find the joy in unwrapping. This can be done several times before the big day.
2. Make it Easy! For our children who struggle with fine motor skills, unwrapping might be a daunting task. If they will be opening multiple gifts in one day, try using gift bags or gift boxes where they can easily get gifts inside. At times when you aren’t the one giving, you can help get them started by tearing one end of the paper.
3. Reduce Attention. Although part of the joy of giving a gift is to watch the person receive it, this could add more stress for your child by adding more verbal demands. Your child may also need time to process what the gift is and try it before realizing the joy it will bring them. Giving them breaks between presents can also be helpful.

Holiday’s can be a lot of fun with many special activities and family traditions, but they can also cause a lot of stress for our kids who prefer their schedules to stay the same. To help with these changes in routine, we suggest using a visual schedule. Here are some tips to help get started:

1. Add pictures for children who aren’t yet reading independently.
2. Keep them short and have a few throughout the day. This way if an unexpected change occurs, you can modify the next schedule. This is especially important if you are traveling to one or more places on the holiday.
3. When introducing a new schedule, review it with them several times.
4. Include parts of the day that will follow their typical schedule.
5. Don’t tie activities to specific times of the day- this allows more flexibility and keeps them from watching the clock.
6. Include times for a break or relaxation after activities that your child typically finds stressful.

Christmas Tree Cones

Here is a fun alternative to decorating gingerbread houses. We have found that our kids are more successful because it doesn’t take quite as long, so they are able to sustain their attention for the entire activity!

Green frosting or white frosting mixed with green food coloring
Sprinkles
Pull apart Twizlers
Red and Green M&M’s

Directions:
Spread green frosting all over the cone.
