Tonight at 5:35 PM, Car 4, Engine 7, Engine 4, Squad 1 and Medic 3 responded to a person pinned underneath their car on I-95 between exits 36 and 35 South. Working quickly, crews got the patient out using cribbing, ratchet straps, and “The Jaws of Life” with the TL9 stabilizer. Patient was then transported by Medic 3 to Bridgeport Hospital. Once the scene was deemed safe, crews cleared the highway and returned to service.

This past week, the Milford Professional Firefighters have been hard at work training on vehicle lifting and stabilization. In this scenario, crews practiced rescuing a patient trapped between two vehicles, with one car piled on top of another. Using cribbing, ratchet straps, rescue struts, and chains, our members tested various techniques to create a stable platform, ensuring safe patient access and extrication. Practicing these life-saving skills is essential to keeping the community safe.

Last week, three of our members participated in NASBLA’s Boat Operator Search and Rescue (BOSAR) course, training alongside West Haven, West Shore, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 73. The advanced hands-on training covered risk management, maritime SAR patterns, vessel operations, victim rescue, and vessel towing. Members also networked with instructors and mutual aid partners from West Haven. As a coastal community, it’s critical we stay well-equipped and trained for marine-based emergencies.

Tonight at 8:31 PM, Car 4, Engine 6, and Quint 5 responded to a dumpster fire on Research Drive. Engine 6 arrived first and found flames inside of the dumpster, which crews quickly extinguished. After ensuring the scene was safe, all units returned to service. No injuries.

The Milford Oyster Festival is coming up fast!

Unfortunately, due to changes in this year’s festival format, we’ve had to make the difficult decision not to set up our dunk tank. For the first time in over 30 years, we won’t be at the festival with the tank. While we’re disappointed, we promise the dunk tank will be back!

That said, your Local 944 firefighters will still be at the event raising money for one of our own. You’ll find us downtown and at the festival on Friday, August 15 and Saturday, August 16. We’ll be hosting a Fill the Boot fundraiser and selling a limited number of T-shirts. If you can’t find us—we’ll find you!
This year’s proceeds will go to Hope for Hailey. Hailey is the daughter of one of our firefighters and will be undergoing multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation at Boston Children’s Hospital early next year. She and her family will be living in Boston for several months. All funds raised through Fill the Boot will go directly to support Hailey and her family as they take on the next steps in Hailey’s journey.

We can’t wait to see you all soon at Milford Oyster Festival! Come say hi, grab a shirt, and help us support Hailey!

Congratulations to Brother Jesse Prajer on his promotion to Lieutenant! Jesse was hired in 2018 and has been a Paramedic since 2020. Throughout his career, Jesse has worked on the medic trucks, as well as Quint 5 and Quint 3. Good luck in your new role, brother!

At 7:15 PM tonight, Car 4, Engine 5, Engine 6, Quint 3, Squad 1, Engine 7, Medic 1, and Medic 3 responded to a house fire on Pond Point Ave. E5 and E6 arrived first, reporting smoke coming from the eaves of the roof. Crews quickly stretched a hose line, gained access to inside the home, and extinguished the fire. A cat was rescued from the residence. Investigation of the fire is still on going.
