“Am I an enabler?”

If you’ve ever wondered if you’re enabling someone you care about, or contributing to the problem, read this to see how much of this info. resonates with you.

Someone with an enabler personality has a desire to others, so much so that they help even when it can harm someone. They often step in to fix problems, shield loved ones from consequences, or avoid conflict, even when it causes or exhaustion.

Over time, this behavior leads to , where one person becomes dependent / less accountable & the enabler feels trapped / taken advantage of.

This also leads to a type of , where the enabler feels they can’t stop enabling the person they love without feeling that they abandoned them in their time of need.

For the enabler, this can be emotionally draining & damaging to their .

Enabling behavior is when someone (unintentionally or intentionally) supports another person’s harmful / behavior / .

How Attachment Styles Play a Role in Imago Therapy

Imago therapy views attachment styles as a key framework for how early childhood experiences with caregivers influence adult .

The core idea is that people unconsciously seek partners who remind them of their childhood caregivers, which re-emerges in adult relationships and often triggers old emotional wounds and patterns.

The word “imago” refers to the unconscious image of a loved one formed in , which includes both positive and negative traits of our .

How attachment styles play a role in therapy:

The therapy focuses on identifying how these unmet childhood emotional needs, such as for , respect, and autonomy, manifest in current relationship conflicts.

Parental Jealousy: Dealing with parents who are jealous of you.

may be of their due to many reasons including of opportunities & success, feelings of inadequacy when their own past shortcomings are highlighted by their child’s achievements, or issues like .

This can manifest as over their child’s talent, youth, looks, or achievements that the parent feels they never received themselves.

Reasons for :

❎Envy of opportunity & success: if their child has opportunities they lacked (better education, financial security, social connections).

❎Comparison to their past: can force them to confront their own past shortcomings (difficult friendships or lack of ) watching their child experience things they never had.

❎Psychological issues: stemming from a parent’s own & . With parents, the child’s success can be perceived as a direct threat to their sense of superiority.

❎Resentment of youth: jealous of their child’s youth, beauty, or vitality, especially if they feel their own are fading.

❎Living out unfulfilled dreams: if a child is living out dreams that the parent was unable to achieve, resenting them for being able to do something they themselves could not.

To deal with , set boundaries, communicate about feelings & seek external support. It's important to practice selfcare, celebrate your own successes & limit sharing details about your life that may trigger their jealousy.

How to enforce boundaries:

✔ Limit information: create regarding goals & successes. Avoid discussing topics that may be sensitive (projects, plans, money, personal life). Stick to neutral topics.
