Did you know that heat, fuel, and oxygen are the three essential elements every fire needs to burn? This is known as the fire triangle. Remove just one of these, and the fire can’t survive.

That’s exactly how fire extinguishers work—some cool the heat, some remove the oxygen, and others interrupt the chemical reaction.

Understanding this simple triangle can help you choose the right extinguisher for your business.

Stay informed. Stay protected.

In an emergency, every second counts. But when panic hits, even the best extinguisher is useless if no one knows how to use it.

We see it all the time—businesses that are equipped but not prepared.

Knowing the PASS method (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) could be the difference between a close call and a catastrophe.

At Holmes Fire & Safety, we don’t just inspect equipment—we help train your team so they’re confident, not confused, when it matters most.

Need hands-on training or a refresher for your staff? Let’s make sure your business is truly prepared.

Fact: Not true—and potentially dangerous. Pool maintenance areas often contain oxidizers like calcium hypochlorite or chlorine-based compounds. If ABC dry chemical extinguishers (which contain monoammonium phosphate) are used near these chemicals, it can cause a violent chemical reaction, including toxic gas release or even explosion.

The Fix: For areas with oxidizers, such as pool pump rooms or chemical storage spaces, NFPA 10 recommends clean agent or water-based extinguishers, not ABC.

At Holmes Fire & Safety, we ensure your extinguishers are matched to your hazards—not just for compliance, but for real-world safety.

Engine room fires are one of the most dangerous threats to facility operations—especially when the generator is housed in a separate building or container. These isolated areas may help reduce overall risk to your main facility, but they also mean fires can go undetected until it's too late.

That’s why we install automatic fire suppression systems specifically designed for generators and enclosed engine rooms. These systems don’t wait for someone to notice the fire—if heat or flames are detected, the system immediately shuts down the engine and discharges an agent directly onto the source of the fire.

No delay. No guessing. No one needs to be present.

For high-risk areas like this containerized generator, Holmes Fire & Safety delivers the protection you need—automated, fast-acting, and code-compliant. Let’s talk about safeguarding your critical equipment.

If the label (or nameplate) on a fire extinguisher is missing, unreadable, or damaged, that extinguisher is officially out of service.

Why? The label tells you what type of fire the extinguisher is rated for—without that info, your team could grab the wrong tool in an emergency, making a dangerous situation worse.

At Holmes Fire & Safety, we inspect every extinguisher for compliance—including labels. If it's not clear, it's not safe—and we’ll make sure your fire protection is ready when it counts.

Stay compliant. Stay protected. Contact us today.

Every fire needs three elements to ignite and continue burning. Remove just one, and the fire collapses. This concept is known as the fire triangle, and it includes:

· Heat – The ignition source. This could be a spark, open flame, friction, or even hot surfaces.
· Fuel – Anything that can burn: wood, paper, grease, oil, gas, or chemicals.
· Oxygen – Fires need at least 16% oxygen to sustain combustion (air contains about 21%).

🔥 Eliminate One = Extinguish the Fire

Understanding this triangle is the basis of all fire protection—and why using the right extinguisher for the right type of fire is critical.

At Holmes Fire & Safety, we make sure your facility is equipped with the right systems to break the fire triangle fast—before damage or danger escalates.

Fact: It’s not about weight—it’s about the UL rating. A 20 lb extinguisher is usually rated to fight a larger fire area than two 10 lb units. You can’t “combine” ratings just by doubling extinguishers. In a fast-spreading fire, that difference matters.

The Solution: At Holmes Fire & Safety, we make sure you have the right size fire extinguishers for your hazards—properly sized, rated, and ready. Don’t leave fire protection to guesswork. Contact us today.

If a fire extinguisher is mounted with the top of the unit more than 4.5 feet from the floor, it’s a violation of fire code.

Why it matters? In an emergency, every second counts—and extinguishers mounted too high can be out of reach for shorter individuals or those with mobility challenges. If someone can’t access it quickly, a small fire can escalate fast.

At Holmes Fire & Safety, we make sure every extinguisher in your building is properly mounted and accessible—keeping your team safe and your business fully code compliant.

Let us help you get it right. Contact us today.

Outdated. Incomplete. Non-Compliant.
That’s what we often find when checking first aid kits in the workplace.

Adhesive bandages that don’t stick. Medications long expired. Antiseptics dried up. And worst of all—no one notices until it’s too late.

Neglecting your first aid supplies could cost more than a fine—it could cost precious time in an emergency.

We inspect and restock your first aid cabinets to meet ANSI standards—so you’re always ready, always compliant.

Let’s keep your team safe and your business prepared.
