Investing in our business to better serve YOU! We are doubling the size of our chapel which means we will now be able to accommodate services of all sizes.. No more standing or crowding. We are doing this while still supporting our community through event sponsorships and direct financial support to local resources for the vulnerable. Folks, look around. We are doing ALL of this while still keeping our prices fair and ethical. This is what a business which operates on real Christian ethics looks like. We will post more pictures once everything is completed. Our new expanded parking lot is next...stay tuned.

This is excellent advice. Ensure your accounts are payable on death to the person of your choice. 10 minutes at the bank will save your loved ones months of hardship after your death.

Saying “my will covers everything” is how families get blindsided and lawyers get paid....

This comes up in the comments on almost every estate planning post. Someone says "my will takes care of everything." It does not, if any accounts have beneficiary designations that say something different.

A Transfer on Death (TOD) designation on a brokerage account, a Pay on Death (POD) on a bank account, or a beneficiary form on a life insurance policy or IRA is a contract with that financial institution.

When you die, the account transfers directly to whoever is named on that form. The probate court never touches it. Your will has no authority over it.

Frank has a will that says all assets split equally among his three children. His brokerage account has a TOD naming only his oldest son. He added it in 2014 when he opened the account. He updated his will in 2021. He never updated the TOD. Frank dies. The oldest son gets the full $480,000. The other two children get nothing from that account. The will is irrelevant.

This is not a hypothetical. Estate attorneys see this constantly. The most common version is an ex-spouse still listed as the beneficiary on a life insurance policy or retirement account years after a divorce. Some states have laws that automatically revoke an ex-spouse designation at divorce. Many do not. And financial institutions follow the form on file regardless.

The fix is a beneficiary audit. Pull the beneficiary designation on every account you own: brokerage, bank, IRA, 401(k), life insurance, annuity. Compare each one to what your will or trust says. If they conflict, the form wins. Update the forms.

We are truly honored to receive this award. Thank you!

The Transfer of Ownership

In April, 2019 I was fortunate enough to purchase Creason Funeral Home. After having been owned by the Creason family for 60 years, the former owners decided it was time to retire and pass the torch. It has been very exciting to take over the funeral home and many changes have been made already. I have started with a complete refresh of the interior. Thus far the furniture and decor have been completely changed. I wanted to have a funeral home that was both stylish and cozy. The addition of 17 Tiffany chandeliers has brought both warmth and beauty to the atmosphere of the funeral home. I have also installed maple plantation shutters on all the interior windows to give it a more modern look. The selection/arrangement conference room is also in the process of undergoing modernization. Gone are the days of many funeral homes having full-size caskets displayed. To maximize space and appeal to changing consumer tastes, the full-size caskets have been replaced with small sections mounted on one wall. This has made room for modern shelving that will hold a very large selection of cremation merchandise including urns and keepsakes.

The outside of the funeral home is currently in the process of much change. Within the coming days, we will have a double sided LED display sign installed on the eastern lawn. This new sign will display all of our service information as well as community and church announcements. We are very excited about this investment in the funeral home and in Millstadt. The exterior of the building will be repainted and some repair work will be completed beginning October 1, 2019. We will be eliminating the flower boxes and changing the building’s exterior color. Speaking of flower boxes, while they will be gone, we are very excited that Josh Casey, professional landscaper, has been selected to install a full garden on the eastern lawn and in the front of the funeral home. Josh’s designs are simply stunning and we very much look forward to the breathtaking work he has planned. Stay tuned for that, it will be well worth the wait!

I am so honored to be the owner of Creason Funeral Home and to be entrusted to care for the loved ones of my client families. This is a responsibility that I take very seriously and am humbled beyond words to be chosen to care for those I serve. My commitment to quality and service in embedded in all aspects of the funeral home. My staff and I are very grateful to have the opportunity to serve all families who call on us during their time of need. We are here for you.
