In the US, Babesiosis disease is spread by various ticks.

B. microti is spread by the black-legged tick: the Eastern black-legged deer tick, found on the East Coast and in several mid-western states, and the Western black legged tick, found on the West Coast.

B. duncani is transmitted by D. albipictus, the winter tick.

Ticks can carry many pathogens all at the same time and transmit them in a single bite. The most common tick-borne diseases include Lyme disease, Babesiosis, Bartonellosis, Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Rickettsiosis. When tick-borne diseases other than Lyme are acquired, they are referred to as co-infections. Testing for multiple diseases is often recommended when testing for Lyme.

Hear more about co-infections from Lyme expert Dr. Joseph Burrascano.
