Lyme disease has been historically underfunded relative to its growing public health impact. However, recent appropriations by congressional committees have raised funding levels for Lyme and tick-borne disease research at the NIH and CDC, with new minimum research spending levels proposed and specific funding earmarked for HHS-related programs in fiscal years 2025 and 2026. These developments reflect a growing acknowledgment of the need for sustained and enhanced funding to better understand and combat Lyme disease after decades of relative neglect.

Cord blood is a noninvasive source of biological material that can be used to assess a newborn’s potential exposure to tick-borne pathogens, particularly when maternal infection is suspected during pregnancy. Collected safely after delivery, cord blood allows for infection screening without compromising the infant’s blood volume. With IGeneX testing, we can use a cord blood exclusively for PCR-based testing, rather than traditional serologic assays.

IGeneX offers urine testing for certain diseases; however, in general, blood is preferred because it provides more reliable and clinically meaningful results. Because blood circulates throughout the body, it reflects systemic infection rather than activity limited to a single organ. Antibodies—critical markers of tick-borne diseases—are present in blood but not in urine. In addition, blood-based testing is less affected by variables such as hydration status or kidney function, which can significantly skew urine results. Most clinically validated and widely accepted laboratory assays are also optimized for blood samples, resulting in greater accuracy and consistency.

IGeneX is a global leader in testing for Lyme Disease, Relapsing Fever & other Tick-Borne Diseases with over 30 years of experience. Get tested.
