Elaine Maheux

Pastor Elaine Maheux (née Martel) lived a life of learning, growth, and constant movement. Born in Pittsfield, MA, Elaine celebrated two birthdays: her actual birth on January 25, 1938, and her "official" one on January 27th, thanks to a nurse struggling to read the doctor’s handwriting. She delighted in recounting this story and happily celebrated two birthdays every year.

In 1956, she married her high school sweetheart, Leo Maheux. Elaine never let circumstances stop her from engaging in life. While 35 weeks pregnant with her first son, Marc, she took to the dance floor at her brother-in-law’s wedding to jitterbug—an act that nearly gave her mother a heart attack, but was simply Elaine refusing to sit out.

Her early years required immense resilience, living in a one-bedroom trailer and then a small apartment with two infants born just ten months apart. The boys grew up in Loudon, NH; Poughkeepsie, NY; and Underhill, VT. She anchored her family with purposeful order. Whether it was her 5:30 AM Bible readings or her meticulously kept home, she lived her whole life with resolve. To her grandchildren, she was "Mémère," the provider of pumpernickel bread and chicken soup that simply appeared on the table.

1996 was a year that tested her spirit unlike any other. In a span of nine months, Elaine lost her father in February, her sister Annette in August, and her husband Leo, who went to work one day in November and never came home.

Elaine did not retreat. She was a bit of a nomad, always seeking, traveling, and learning; her spirit simply kept her moving. She trained as a pastor and founded Island Bible Fellowship church in her home in Grand Isle. At 73, she moved solo to Israel, a testament to her courage and her desire to be exactly where she felt called. Elaine is remembered for her resolve to persist through hardship, her interminable faith, and her laughter at her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s antics.

Elaine is survived by her sons, Marc (Jane) and Tom (Mary); her granddaughters, Heidi (Shane) Conger, Melissa, Emily, and Annie; and her great-grandchildren, Willa and Gabriel.

Services will be held in the Minor Funeral Home 237 Route 7 South, Milton Saturday, Feb 14th, 2026 at 1:00PM. If you are unable to attend in person, the family has created a zoom link for friends and family to attend the service virtually https://unc.zoom.us/my/amaheux

"My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." — John 14:2–3

James Anthony Pebler

James Anthony Pebler, a beloved father, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away on February 5, 2026, at his home in Milton, Vermont, following a brief illness. Born on December 26, 1965, in Albany, New York, James lived a vibrant life filled with kindness, joy, and an unwavering spirit.

A proud graduate of Burlington High School in 1984, James embodied a work ethic that saw him through diverse careers. He started as an employee at Al's French Fry's, ventured into landscaping, and dedicated many years as a custodian in schools throughout Chittenden County. For the last decade of his life, he worked as a roofer, taking pride in the craftsmanship of his work while earning the respect of his colleagues and his community.

James was known for his infectious personality; he never met a stranger. His warmth and generosity knew no bounds—he had a unique ability to touch the hearts of those around him and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Known for his no-filter approach, he spoke his mind freely, which only endeared him further to his family and friends.

Among his many cherished memories were the joyful times spent on cruises, where he could be found dancing unabashedly with two glasses in hand, reveling in the beauty of life. Sundays were reserved for leisurely drives on his beloved Can Am Spyder, an activity he relished. James also enjoyed the thrill of the casino and found pleasure in dining out at various restaurants. His creative spirit extended into woodworking, where he skillfully crafted the furniture that adorned his home—each piece a testament to his love for artistry and craftsmanship.

James's pride was palpable when reflecting on his life, particularly regarding his divorce, which he considered a chance for a second life. It symbolized newfound freedom, and he approached it with immense gratitude, viewing it as one of his proudest accomplishments.

He is survived by his daughter, Grace Hepburn, and her husband, Samuel; siblings Keith Pebler, Emma "Kathy" Jarvis, and William Pebler, alongside his sister-in-law Cindy. He was also a devoted grandfather to his two grandchildren, Coby and Shawn Nevills, and will be deeply missed by his many nieces and nephews.

As we remember James, let us carry forward the lessons of kindness, generosity, and exuberance for life that he so freely shared with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will forever echo in our hearts.

Marlene Theresa Loomis

Marlene Theresa Loomis, of Williston, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on January 25, 2026, at the McClure Miller Respite House, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 19, 1943, in Burlington, Vermont, Marlene's journey through life was filled with love, laughter, and dedication to those she cherished most.

Marlene began her career as a devoted homemaker, nurturing and raising her children with unwavering love and guidance. After several years, she transitioned to a rewarding career at IBM, where she worked diligently for over 25 years, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues. A proud graduate of the former Brigham Academy in Bakersfield, her education laid the foundation for her determination and strong-willed personality that shone brightly throughout her life.

Known for her sense of humor, Marlene was a radiant presence who delighted in the joys of family life. She cherished every moment spent with her husband and snowbird partner, Howard, whom she shared a beautiful union with for 24 years. During the winter, they shared a home in Daytona, FL. Together, they created a lifetime of memories through travels to warm destinations and exploring places like Florida, Maine, and even taking a memorable tour of Tennessee. One of the highlights of their adventures was a cherished trip to Europe, where they visited the enchanting cities of London and Paris.

Marlene found immense joy in the simplest of things. She adored her grandchildren, who were a source of pride and joy for her. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her biological family; she poured love into each knitting project, crafting blankets and gifts for those dear to her. Her green thumb brought life to her home, as she took great pleasure in caring for her spring flowers and feeding the local wildlife, including her beloved “Chipper.” Marlene’s collection of frogs, gnomes, and owls, along with her cherished dolls, provided her family with countless memories and sentimental value over the years.

Her passion for cooking and baking filled her home with warmth and delicious aromas, and she was known as a healthy baker who delighted in sharing her creations. She also found enjoyment in playing cards, particularly her favorite game of "31," and could often be found immersing herself in the soothing strains of country music.

In her later years, Marlene embraced an active lifestyle, reverting to her roots as a runner in her youth and transitioning to walking, relishing the beauty of Vermont’s fall foliage. Her love for her home reflected her careful attention and effort to make it a beautiful haven for her family, a place where everyone was welcome.

Marlene is survived by her adoring husband Howard, her children, Tammy Castle and her husband Randy, Todd Lagrow and his wife Tina, Jodi Girouard and her husband James, and John Lagrow and his wife Ligia. She is also remembered by her stepson Scott Loomis, her twelve grandchildren, and her six great-grandchildren. Marlene is mourned by her sisters, Leone Lowery and her husband Jerome, and Priscilla Giles and her husband Doyle. She also leaves behind brother in laws Gayland and Durward Loomis Jr.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Alice and Leon Messier, her children's father Zenneth Lagrow, and her sister, Marilyn Hunt. Marlene will forever be remembered for her acts of kindness, her laughter and the profound impact she made on all who knew her. Her legacy will continue to flourish in the hearts of her family and friends, a reminder of the beautiful journey she took and the love that remains.

A burial service will take place in the spring in Belvidere Cemetery.
