I remember when my dad was in the hospital. I went to visit him and I instantly knew something was off. He was more confused than normal. I spoke to one nurse and 2 docs. I told them something had changed with my dad. They told me perhaps he moved to a new floor and was more disoriented. I knew it was something more. I tried to explain to them his baseline and how just the day before we was better. They acted like they listened and ran no further checks. The next day, my dad was in ICU.
I respect the role that healthcare providers play in treatment and care. After all, I spent years working in the very same hospital where my dad was hospitalized at the time. Yet, I can’t help but feel that there is an attitude of providers know best. We can’t forget that families know their loved one better than any provider. It’s important we value what they say and take heed of their observations.
These thoughts were sparked by hearing recent hospital experience with her grandma. Sending love 💖
