HAND ME DOWNS--
This is my great-grandfather Stephen Brannen aka St. Clair. He is the family scallywag and I have done a great deal of research and organizing documents of this rather complicated man.
Stephen Brannen was born in Orient Maine in 1836. He fought in the Civil War from beginning to end and saw his brother die in battle. He went home to his wife Isabella and his 6 daughters. In 1870ish... his feet got itchy and he up and deserted Isabella and the girls with one on the way. He went west and along the way changed his name to Stephen St. Clair (not sure why he chose that name.). In Indiana Pennsylvania, he met and married the VERY YOUNG Mary Murphy (15)! He carried her off to western Michigan landing in Big Rapids. Soon they had 7 children of their own (2 died young).
Deserting, marrying young and changing his name are only a few examples of his "skallywaggedness"! :0
I have been following Stephen and his antics for many years and have created a timeline, Civil War military engagements and pension problems research that resulted in him being exposed for being a bigamist!
