Join us on Tuesday, March 10, in the Community Room on the 2nd floor of GLIIHC, for a lesson on when and how to start growing your own plants starting from seed. We’re already on Class 4 of Movement is Tradition: Jingle Dress Dance, and the energy keeps building each time we gather. This Wednesday, March 4, we’ll continue strengthening our steps, our stamina, and our connection to the healing power of the Jingle Dress Dance.

Each class brings more confidence, more rhythm, and more community. Whether you’ve been with us since day one or are jumping in now, there’s still space for you in the circle.

Wear your moccasins if you have them, bring your good energy, and get ready to move.

Participants under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.

Let’s keep the jingles moving. ✨

We are incredibly grateful to be recipients of the TMJ4 News and WaterStone Bank Community Baby Shower.

A heartfelt thank you to TMJ4, WaterStone Bank, and every community member who donated. This annual event supports so many families with babies across Milwaukee, and it truly means so much to see our community come together in this way.

It warms our hearts to know how deeply Milwaukee cares for and uplifts families during such an important season of life. We’re honored to help pass that generosity along to the families we serve.

REMINDER: Podcast & Paint is coming up! Wednesday, Febraury 25

February Women's Gathering (18+) is a chance to slow down, tap into your creativity, and share space with others in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Come unwind, paint at your own pace, and reflect together as we listen to a thoughtfully selected podcast. No art experience is needed, just bring yourself and an open heart.

Taking time for creativity and connection is a powerful way to care for your mental and emotional well-being. We’d love to see you there.

This February marks 100 years since Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926, the foundation of today's Black History Month. For a century, Black healthcare pioneers like Dr. Charles Drew, who revolutionized blood banking, and Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, whose research helped develop COVID-19 vaccines, have transformed medicine while fighting systemic racism. Despite extraordinary contributions—from Rebecca Lee Crumpler becoming the first Black woman physician in 1864 to Dr. Patricia Bath inventing sight-saving cataract technology—Black Americans still face severe health disparities due to systemic inequities. The legacy of medical discrimination and traumas like the Tuskegee Study reminds us that celebrating Black history in healthcare requires both honoring achievements and addressing ongoing injustice. From 1926 to 2026, the journey continues: we celebrate Black excellence while committing to health equity for all communities.

The healthcare contributions from African American physicians and researchers go back centuries. These pioneering men and women have developed innovative tre...

Our Story

The Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center (GLIIHC) grew out of an awareness in the 1970s of the poor health of Milwaukee’s Native American community. Since its inception, GLIIHC has tripled in size and besides the medical clinic, houses a pharmacy, dental clinic, behavioral health center and a fitness center that is used by our physical therapist.

We provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive health care for the whole family. Tradition reminds us that in order to heal, every part of a human being must be addressed: The mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Our team strives to improve the essential health, peace and well-being of those that reside in the metropolitan Milwaukee area.

Your treatment encompasses the whole family, including the community. Located in the heart of Milwaukee’s near South Side, at 930 W. Historic Mitchell St., your urban Indian health center’s medical, wellness, cultural, spiritual and social services are available for people of all tribes, races, and ethnicities.
