These suggestions from are great ways to support play skills without adult prompting. Just like language expansion, notice what your child is doing then join in and add on! Doing so will show your child new ways to engage with their toys, as well as hear great language models.

During therapy sessions, we use expectant pausing (or wait time) all the time! To offer an expectant pause, wait for a few seconds and use a facial expression/gesture to let the child know we want them to respond. Expectant pausing is so powerful because it gives the communicator time to process your comment/question and then respond on their own. Try pausing while you’re singing songs (The wheels on the bus go…), reading (Five little monkeys jumping on the…), and during familiar routines (Ready, set…). Image by .talkers

Happy Halloween weekend! Trick or treating is an exciting event for many children but can be challenging for those still learning to speak or who are nonverbal. Using a trick or treat visual is a great option for children to participate if they can’t or don’t want to verbally speak.

It’s the final week of AAC awareness month! Signing is a type of AAC and can be beneficial for all children, particularly those who have no/limited verbal language or are unintelligible. Using sign language does not limit or delay spoken language - it actually promotes it! Teaching your child sign language empowers them to communicate their desires which helps reduce frustrations and behaviors. Image by

It’s the third week of AAC Awareness month! “Eddie the Elephant Has Something To Say”, by Alison Johns and illustrated by Tara Put, is a sweet story that explains AAC to children. It highlights that everyone has different ways of communicating and the importance of every person being able to express themselves. A great read for children who use AAC and/or know friends that do!

After your child does something well, try offering a specific praise! This will let your child know exactly what they did well, as well as provide additional language models. If your child is doing their speech/language home practice, you can give specific feedback too. Image by .slp

Core words are the words we use with the highest frequency when we communicate - they make up the “core” of our vocabulary. Core words are important because a small set of words can be used to express many different ideas in many different contexts. Try emphasizing words like “go, stop, open, mine, yes, no, in, out” the next time you’re playing with your language learner! Image by and
